    "My Secret Life in the Klan"

    So, I've got this friend who graduated a couple of years behind me, and he moved down to Kansas City to pursue his writing career. About six months ago, when I still lived in Iowa City, my friend came back, telling about his exploits and a certain story he was working on.

    "So yeah, I joined the Klan," he said, half-gulping his PBR. I choked on my drink, as did the six others sitting at the table. "You fucking what??" asked a girl on the end. "I joined the Klan. I'm going undercover for a story," he replied.

    He started telling us about this paper that he was working for, and about how their newsstands were being littered with *** propoganda (someone was pulling all the papers out, then inserting fliers into them, then putting them back into the newsstand). No one knew who was doing it, and he thought it'd be an interesting story. So he was "joining" the Klan and trying to find out. Needless to say, we were all kind of worred about it.

    The story came out about a month and a half ago, but I had totally forgotten about it until my fiancee sent me a link for it tonight.

    It's an fairly interesting read, but I think the most interesting (or maybe scary) part of it is the "comments" section, where there's some of the most ridiculous bullshit I've ever read.

      Wow. Just.. wow.

      I was a little freaked out at first when I visited the site and some audio from a phone call between the two guys started playing. There was no visible stop button. Anyway, I read it. Ahhhh

          That Michael Burks guy in the comments section is one sadistic fellow. I skimed through the comments section and this guy felt like writing a thesis paper on how every other race is inferior. I mean to the point where he uses anthropology and anatomy to justify his point.

          The NSM response was hilarious, made for an entertaining 4 min read.

                Why are they using the term "White Power"?

                There's nothing powerful about them, they sneak around putting spam in your newspapers. This article just reassured me that these guys are fucking stupid.

                      Those comments are so illogical. I find it funny how that guy tries to use "facts" that are old, outdated, biased, and simply wrong. Any Psych class can prove that. Better yet, he needs to take a stats class and realize how biased his numbers are.

                          Weird. That's your buddy, Conc? I read this article about a month ago. Most of the Klan activity is on the Missouri side of Kansas City, where there is a more highly concentrated minority population. Westport, one of the main bar districts in KC, can be a crazy place on the weekends...typically Christian fundamentalist groups (ol' Fred Phelps's Westboro Baptist Church among others) are typically there picketing in front of the bars with signs that say "THE PARTY ENDS IN HELL"...no, I'm not kidding. A few times I've seen people handing out fliers as well, and in a very discreet fashion. This article really made me realize that those were probably Klan members. Crazy.

                            The biggest (and funniest, in my opinion) culture shock of my move: there's a metric shit-ton of churches here, more or less three times the amount of Iowa City, even though the town is about half the size. Anyway, about half of them put up those ridiculous marquees in front with equally ridiculous sayings like "EXPOSURE TO THE SON PREVENTS THE BURNING!"

                            I seriously can't wait to move the fuck out of here already.
