  • Cloverfield Tonight!

So by some stroke of luck, I was able to come across a ticket for myself to the midnight premier of Cloverfield at the Meridian (big time theater) in Seattle. I'm about to head down there and I've steered clear of any spoilers whatsoever. I have however read a few reviews, and it got a 71% on rottentomatoes, which is pretty solid.

    I'll report back later.

Anyone else going to see it tonight/soon?

It got my pulse pounding for just over an hour. I love monster movies, so I guess this one sorta appealed to me, though I feel like most people that can deal with the handheld camera effect (which I eventually just got comfortable with), will have an enjoyable experience.

I really commend them for doing something new and innovative. I can't really see this movie being made another way, while still maintaining the same tension throughout the flick. Some of the best scenes were a result of the up close and personal perspective camera presents. There's also this eerie back story, that could not have been told in another fashion. It's a unique tale, from the Government Classification at the beginning, to the interspersed moments of sadness. We're in the trenches with these people, and when some of their numbers eventually came (I don't feel that's a spoiler...Is it?), our theater had quite a few people gasping.

The special effects were good enough, but I feel like this is going to be an "Independence Day" kind of movie. It was a good choice to only show parts of the monster throughout, and one regret I have is the ending when the monster is actually revealed. They just got too arrogant with the CGI, which looked phenomenal from a distance, and in quick bursts. Instead, you get a very personal look at the creature a couple of minutes before the end, and it only highlights the fact that Hollywood is still a couple of steps away from extremely realistic CGI. But, I'm really just bitching...The SFX are more than adequate and very believable.

And oh how awesome it is when the movie finally picks up. The party scenes at the beginning only heighten the tension, until an "earthquake" finally sets the movie in motion. After that is the now infamous, Statue of Liberty scene, and the movie never slows down.

Good movie, but not as good as the Host. I give it a 8/10. It was definitely worth the money.

I especially loved the parts when the frat bastards were talking/laughing at random times.

But good movie. Definitely glad I saw it at the premier.

Hidden white for those who have seen the movie:
I kind of wished they showed more of the wounds on the people like Beth and Hud. Was something holding her down in her apartment? (since she was able to walk eventually).

They did a fantastic job of barely showing the monster. I was kind of glad when they finally showed it though. I was looking forward to what it looked liked ever since Transformers. And were it's eyes pulsating?

When the movie ended, someone in the theater was like, WHAT THE FUCK.

I had a similar feeling. Of all the 8 secs the monster came on in the movie, 5 of those were blurred by the video camera. I still dont know what the monster looks like. The video camera gave half the people in the theater seizures (as can be seen when ppl repeatly rub their eyes, hunch over, and leave the theater).

Horrible plot. I won't say anything but my 9 year old cousin can come up something as geniune as the Cloverfield plot. I give credit for the hand-held video, but dont EVER do that SHIT again. I ended up wanting to puke over the movie (several times).

I realize some might be excited over the suspense and the movie, but as of this moment, cloverfield is ranked #1 on my "worst movie of the century" list; Godzilla was infinitely better.

                    Succinctly, WHAT THE FUCK.

They captured it perfectly. I felt on the edge of my seat the whole time, it was incredibly intense. Based on the ARG, I knew it was going to leave me with questions, and it did a great job of it.

                      Possible spoiler:
at the end of the credits, there's someone talking into the camera after it's been retrieved and malfunctioned to record backwards. The guy is saying "It's still alive." O_O

Anyone else notice at the end of the movie when they're on Conny Island, there's something that falls out of the sky and into the ocean?

ok i just saw it - it's worth seeing, but if blair witch's shaky camera while running around didn't do it for you, well, this isn't your movie. The monster didn't impress me that much. But the experience was immersive enough to make me forgive a lot of how's and why's and what's.

                          To Twerp:
Did you not see that long, bloody metal rod that is punctured just below Beth's shoulder?

                          To PaulO:
Are you fucking serious? My friend seemed to be the only one who caught that and we were all calling him a liar. God, I'm so angry if I really missed that.

I loved the movie. If you didn't like the shaky camera and the ending; and you knew that it was all going to be shot through a "hand-held" camera; then why the fuck would you watch it? It was everything I expected and I enjoyed the experience. I'm definitely going to be watching it again just to catch all of the shit I missed.

I was planning to see it with some friends, but since I hated blair witch project so much, I should give this movie a pass I guess.

I couldn't stand the blair witch project either, but I was advised to sit near the back of the movie theater for this movie specifically. We did, and it was surprisingly comfortable.
