I don't see how you can say that "watches are for suckers." Yes, they can be about status, but so is clothing, car, house, almost everything. I, for one, like wearing nice clothing, drive a cool car, and I have a goddamn functional nice watch. And I like it. You can think they're not your thing but don't think you're better than me because of it.
Also I put the watch in a band that covers the face unless I want to look at it because I have a habit of destroying them through sports or flying or whatever.
Edit: Also, I'm in many places where I don't bring my cell phone and a watch is the only reliable way to tell time. Hello, combat aircraft cockpit/hiking/foreign country.
