All he said was he was against medical marijuana. He seemed to know something about the issue because he suggested a synthetic alternative which the questioner said wasn't good for him. The question posed to him, -- "Would you arrest me and my doctor(s)?" -- wasn't really a fair one: He wasn't running to be chief of police or someone else who would decide whom and whom not to arrest for marijuana possession. He obviously didn't have an opinion on whether that particular man, who he just met and whose case he had only heard from the subject himself, would be arrested, which is what the two guys there seemed to demand he answer. I think he told them his relevant position: That he was against medical marijuana and in favour of synthetic alternatives.

well one thing that struck me odd was that you never heard of this guy, especially since he was running for republican primary -> presidency

but also, yeah that was kind of fucked up. If I was in his shoes, I would be like I'm sure people in certain conditions as yourself would be a morally just exception.

Medical MJ is a huge threat to the pharmaceutical companies.. Its not hard to see that these same companies who pay government officials bags of money to pass dangerous drugs, would pay an official to speak out against natural MJ in favour of some commercially controlled synthetic crap.

I'd be in favor of a synthetic alternative as well, for the sole reason smoking isn't that healthy. I also don't give "natural" products some kind of elevated status over "bad synthethic" chemicals that a lot of people tend to do. I actually think he made a good choice of turning away from that interview, the way the question was asked showed me that he had no chance of answering it statisfactory at all; if he said no he would be inconsistent, if he said yes he would be a bad guy.

Edit: I just remembered the voting test told me I had most in common with this guy, except for the fact he voted totally opposite on things like abortion etc.

I also agree that "Would you arrest me and my doctor?" is an unfair question. It kinda reminds me of a fallacy we studied in my english class. I think it's called a complex question or something. But basically what the guy was asking him, fully aware of the answer he would probably get and make Romney feel like a jackass, was "Are you against medical marijuana?" and "Would you arrest me for using it?"

I would like to add that since the guy gave Romney some new information ("the synthetic stuff doesn't work for me") which would be an anecdote against his position of using synthetic instead of the real thing, Romney should have maybe asked for more information from the guy, maybe contact information so they could discuss it better later, or to perhaps get in contact with his doctors to get a more professional opinion. So I guess Romney was a dick in the sense of not being more receptive and just coming off as dyed in the wool and not willing to change his position with new information.

If he really wanted to be magnanimous he should have been like "Well, as it stands, and as a statesmen who has position on these things, I'm against medical marijuana and in favour of synthetic alternatives, because I'm under the impression, as a layperson in medical things, that the synthetic alternatives are viable ones. If it's true, as you imply, that the synthetics are not viable, then I'll have to review my position, and I'd gladly get in contact with you and your doctors later in order to be informed on this issue."

if you favor synthetics you obviously care that people are suffering, why not let them have cheap and abundant treatment/relief now and worry about synthetics when they become cheaper and more marketable? romney is basically saying "people suffering is totally ok because i hate marijuana, let them get help when someone invents something else".

in this day and age it befuddles me as to why anyone would be so opposed to so obviously a nonthreatening substance.

I think he was referring to pure THC, which is already available. It wouldn't classify it as synthetic since it's cheaper to extract it, but hey, what would he know. It would be safer than smoking anyway.
