Travelling in USA

Personally I would just stick to the east coast and hit up maybe 2-3 possible states of interest from everywhere else.

I think it might get bit expensive to rent a car as I'm travelling alone. If I had company with me, it would be a good solution. And driving alone day after day doesn't sound too exiting and after some googling I found out that being 22-years-old, some companies won't rent a car for me and when they do, I'd have to pay extra money.

If I get the sort of visa that allows me to get in and out of the country, would it be easiest to stop by in Mexico from San Diego to Tijuana? And how bad is Tijuana in tourist hell-hole kind of way?

I'm thinking about spending about 2-3 weeks in NY, Washington, Boston and some smaller places. I'm pretty sure its enough there. But thats pretty much all I have decided so far. Feel free suggest some worthwhile cities, like which ones are in Texas are good for tourists. Houston? Austin? Dallas? San Antonio?

Mexico sure is a shit hole, corruption has gotten worse (never thought it could) so you may be forced into bribing your way out of situations, the toursist areas are 'supposedly' safe but even in small towns across the Texas border are tanks armed with small children carrying ak-47's. I love Mexcio, it's fucking beautiful but truthfully they look at you and see 'American', wear some sort of European or Canadian shirt. I still wouldn't visit anywhere except for the resorts and even then I'd be aprehensive to leave my hotel.

If you're going to the East Coast you should really check out Toronto or Montreal, even for a night or two. Montreal has an amazing youth hostel right beside the Bell Centre, cheap liquor, pub crawls and people your own age. It's something that might be of interest, considering traveling alone gets really lonely. 404 mentioned Niagara Falls, it's absolutely beautiful and just across the American border. Once you go from Buffalo aka 'a giant hole' to a clean place you'll want to explore more into Toronto.

You're talking about Fung Wah. Honestly the difference used to make Fung Wah worth it but Greyhound has gotten so cheap that who cares honestly, they're both shitholes except Fung Wah buses have this trick where they randomly explode (true story)

And Cops, I really am going to visit Canada, but its later in the fall as I'm in Illinois so I think its doable from there. Toronto and Niagara Falls are on list to definitely see and Montreal sure might be cool. I'll try to cover as much as possible from US in the summer. Honestly man, if you can't get a flight to a resort I wouldn't even bother going to Mexico. It's not something a sane person does right now.

I'm glad to hear you're not by-passing Canada, it's really a beautiful place to visit. Once you're in Toronto you can hopefully get cheap flights to Vancouver or Halifax, depending on your budget. Seriously don't fly to Montreal from Toronto, the cities aren't bad and it's a not a shit-hole to take greyhound. It might seem like a shit hole from some American states but honestly for $90 to go from Toronto to Montreal isn't that bad. In euros that would cost nothing.

I've stayed at the HI in Boston and NYC. Both were quite good and safe. That's all I have to contribute.

There are some places which may just be more worth it to drive. North America is much harder to get around without driving outside the large 'transit oriented' cities like NYC, Toronto, Chicago and Montreal.

Driving is also quite easy in North America as the roads are wide and straight and spaces are easy to park in.

I think Denver is a more attractive city than any I've seen out East. Same is true of the other western cities as compared to eastern cities.
