  • Here's an idea, kill NAFTA

then maybe Canada wouldn't sell its oil for 30 cents a liter

America would be stupid to get rid of it but I'd be more than happy to fucking scrap that piece of shit one sided deal.
it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did

Is that really an issue? American sovereignty is guarnteed by population and strength of your country, our sovereignty is not so secure. When it comes to natural resources we're abundantly rich, but god help us if America ever decides to roll us over if we refuse to sell our goods for a price they like. There's a lot of ups for Americans when it comes to NAFTA that I find it almost ridiculous that Americans would bash it, you're not selling oil for a a fifth of what it's worth. Canada doesn't need to sell it's oil to foreign countries, we have enough oil to self sustain.

NAFTA pisses me off. "free trade" is the ABSENCE of any sort sort of thing that nafta is - a system of tarriffs and cartelized agreements that prevent truly free trade.

if we got rid of it, America would benefit the most. assuming that getting rid of trade agreements would lead to a rise in the cost of imports (say Mexico doesn't have to sell us tequila ABC for $X a gallon anymore and, sensing demand, raised the price to $Y) and, therefore, shift supply from foreign to domestic production (given relative elasticity holds, consumers switch to american whiskey DEF which is cheaper). this raises demand which raises supply.. and supply is met by increasing production, which means new jobs or technology. tequila ABC would respond by either decreasing imports to America (perhaps to find a new market in another country that, because of NAFTA, they couldn't trade with prior) or lower their prices to compete with whiskey DEF. in the long run an equilibrium would be established - and both companies will have benefitted.

I actually agree with you, instead of having pre-determined market prices we would see a greater flux in prices, consumerism might just take a whole new 'role'. Why should we sell gas for 30 cents a liter because 10+ years ago that is the price that was agreed on, the markets change as well as prices of domestic products. The consumer and my country has done nothing by shell out more goods then we should for a price that's completely not fair.

There's also a lot of hidden things about NAFTA people forget about, which is that America has first right to a lot of our goods, I know we have a great market in America considering your population size but we've failed at fully opening up to foreign trade. This has hindered our ability to separate our economy from America. To an extent if the ships going down so are we, we're pretty much America's backup plan in times of crises, and we all know very well that unless Canada fully arms itself that America could walk in here and take/do whatever the fuck they wanted to. And this isn't something that's unrealistic considering the population is going up and natural resources are going down. We have an abundance of fresh water but the argument as to who's water that really is will become a huge question of concern even though it's our water.

It was apparently enough of an issue to go to war multiple times a couple hundred years ago.

I don't see how it works against America's sovereignty, but maybe I'm wrong.

yeah, i touched on this in another thread somewhere. NAFTA created three regional agencies that can pass laws and take people to court without america, canada, or mexico's approval. they also forbid not adhering to environmental laws - meaning if canada or mexico passed a law pertaining to environment, the nafta agency could force america to adopt it as well (and don't get me started on how that would wind up destroying the environment). this works both ways - if we pass a law, the agency could force canada to adopt it. it's the definition of infringement of sovereignty

That's all I needed someone to explain to me how it works against America's sovereignty, I think my hate for NAFTA just went up 3 points.

Cops, I find it very hard to believe that the United States will ever enter a conflict with Canada. Maybe it isn't extremely smart of your country to rely on America economically and militaristically, but I still doubt that America would ever cease to protect Canada or try to screw them over economically, considering the relationship we've had for quite some time.
