what are you listening to nowadays? and what are you doing?

well, i'm not really sure what i was up to the last time we were in touch, but for awhile i was doing a little social experiment that involved living in a commune of sorts. it wasn't what you're thinking though. no drum circles. hardly any dreads. just a small group of people growing their own food and getting along without the help of the rest of the world.

that was a shitload of fun, but all good things come to an end, and now i'm working in an office behind a desk so i can save up enough money to get me out west. i'm thinking i'm going to head somewhere around arizona/colorado or the pacific northwest. since the commune, i've seriously gotten into the whole green movement, sustainable crops and renewable energy and what have you. i want to land a job installing solar panels on people's houses.

as far as music, i've completely and utterly lost touch with the whole scene. i didn't (and still don't have) tv or internet or even a stereo. (yeah, i know. i'm using the internet right now, so how can i not have it? i'm visiting my sister and her husband for three or four days. my brother-in-law isn't exactly the handiest guy around and my sis wants a deck.) i think music is more of a part of my life than ever though. i've been playing guitar for just about a year now, and i got a suh-weet harmonica the other day. so i guess instead of waiting on the latest release, i just fuck around and write my own stuff now. or i play 237428374823 mountain goats songs.

The commune thing sounds pretty interesting. Did you leave out of a personal change of heart about the value of the enterprise, or did the whole thing kinda peter out?

it's still going strong. as far as i know, there are thirteen people holding down the fort. i would have stayed myself, but the road was calling. i've been on the east coast my entire life, and my entire life i've been telling myself i'd like to see the left coast.

i'm working in an office, fit. i sort mail and answer phones and sometimes i try to make balloon animals out of my tie but it usually doesn't turn out so well.

Hey Jason-san! Good to hear you've been having some good times, and I hope should you move out west you find the life your looking for. Things are more or less good on the home front for me, I work a lot, which is no good, but it's getting better. Summer is hear, birds are shagging (they really are, I've got baby birds in a nest in my front yard, almost in my mailbox) so things always look good.

That sounds pretty cool. I don't think I could last in a commune. Actually, I know I couldn't sustain myself/pull my weight in that setting.

Was it like the old school communes where there was one big room, one big dining room, etc., or was it structured more like a summer camp? Honestly I don't know a thing about modern communes, so fill me in.

And if your looking out west, give big consideration to Seattle. We have a booming job market in a great locale. As long as you can deal with the rain (most of us learn to love it), you'll have a blast and meet tons of open-minded and extremely kind people. Give it a look.
