If you do travel to CA this summer, keep in mind that the coastline and the fires will not leave it as a postcard picture if you travel down or up between LA and SF. Pacific Coast Highway will not be the same for awhile in areas.

Not sure how the Southern portion of CA is from Orange County down.

From Toronto to Florida it's generally $500-700 when I go, if I travel 2 hours and fly out of Buffalo it's $250-350. I kind of want to visit South Carolina but Florida's cheaper even though it's not as close.
might have to do with the fact that we don't have a regional hub for an airport. it's a lot cheaper to fly out of atlanta or Charlotte than columbia (or so i hear, haven't been able to travel by plane, $$).

Ever since I went to Turkey, Greyhound just doesn't compare anymore.

Their buses are like airplanes on road.

You could also take a more northern route like

which is only 40 more miles according to google.

It depends on what you want to see. Going through the south you'll end up traveling through desert which can be good to see, but it can get a little boring. If you're going in the summer the sun is going to beat down on you the whole time you drive.

Going through Colorado and Utah, you can see some mountains and theres some beautiful forests. But in the fall/winter/spring it might snow on you.

Yeah if you want to transport drugs it's not a bad way of doing it, even the border cops don't want to fuck around with buses too much. Canadian border anyways.

actually megabus is like $10 from Toronto to Buffalo, it's fucking cheaper than greyhound. I'm probably gonna fly out of Buffalo next time I go down south, you think plane tickets are pricey try flying out of Toronto.

Converting that to euros since I'm using a euro-denominated credit card will result in about €320, which eases the pain a bit given the current exchange rate right now and the fact that oil is priced in dollars. So with rising commodity prices in the back of my mind, now might just be the best time to do this trip, before the dollar strengthens again and making this less affordable. You got a point there though with sitting in a car for that long, but looking at what I can save... it's money I might as well invest in my college fund for next year.

Thanks for all the suggestions about picking a route with a more interesting scenery, but frankly all I care about is getting there ASAP and as cheap as possible (thus creating the car vs. plane dilemma). I only have one month of time and I need to go to Missouri and Northwestern New York (state) as well, but they're all a lot closer to my home base.
If you've got a crap load to do then maybe spending 3 days driving isn't the best solution for you, however from what people are saying the drive is pretty beautiful.

check kayak.com for plane prices, it compares air fares. You might also want to try air tran or any other charter company. I just got back from Montreal on the weekend, it was a 5-6 hour train ride from Toronto. I find the train to be a comfortable way of traveling while still enjoying the scenery. I think the amtrak has some interesting routes.

    have you considered this?

You're still looking at over a day of travel, if you think anything more than 20 hours is too much time for you to travel there then you should just fly.
