I can see there possibly being two separate sun's emitting light from the opposite sides of each planet. The only thing I don't get is the perspective shadowing on the furthest planet. Either way, both of your galactic pictures are nice, but straying away from the actual topic. But, oh well.

but then both planets would be lit on both sides, unless someone stuck those damn stars in a giant motherfucking parabola and made the light more directional.

True, I guess the furthest planet away would be lit all around. Though if you think sci-fi, the planet could've been just placed there through a tear in the fabric of space and the light of the other sun hadn't reached it yet.
