We should give up, expecting him to know any sort of history is pointless. I don't think he understands that other countries have contributed to wars as well as progressing our society in such a way that has allowed us to be born in a democracy.

Here's some reasons why no one will ever say thank you.

America decimated Japan, you killed thousands of civilians in probably one of the worst possible ways. America joined the war near the end after thousands upon thousands of Canadians, British, and Russian soldiers, as well as many other soldiers from different countries had given up their lives. Not only that but you also took half the military spoils, such a huge percentage that you would have never gotten if you didn't join so late.

I don't think that is the general consensus by historians and scholars today. Yet we still teach it to our children. I was taught that when we studied history. Many account the operation to the overzealous politicians and military commanders of the time more interested in image and bolstering American military superiority over that of winning a war. Japan was on the brink of surrender, an invasion was unnecessary with or without atomic weapons and the fact that it was a strike on a civilian population makes it a war crime and morally indefensible.

Is it our fault and does it matter today? No, neither of us or anyone old enough to not have a their thumb in their mouth are alive today. American and Japan relations today are high as are with the rest of the West preceding the Bush era.

You may be able to say japan was on the brink of surender, however it was a world war. More was at stake then 2 countries. Those bombs were a necessary evil in a time of war. Japan didnt mind taking lives in pearl harbor, germany didnt mind taking lives from the lusitania ship. Granted this was a smaller scale, however if the bombs werent done when they were, there could have been more countless lives lossed. More then just japan.
