Take it from a Finn, Tera:
The first thing you do is try not to mix too many different kinds of drink together during the previous evening. That'll prevent your stomach going ballistic on your ass in the morning.
Secondly, like so many others here have already mentioned, drink water before you go to bed. Not just a few glasses, but as much as you can take, right up to the point where you're sick of water already. Try a litre at least.
Thirdly, EAT before going to bed if there's some time since your last meal. You're going to want to be nice and full when you close your eyes instead of being hungry.
Fourthly, sleep at least 8 hours if at all possible. Sleep is a great cure.
Finally, drink coffee the first thing when you wake up. That'll prevent a nasty headache but if you followed my 5-point program this far you're just playing it safe at this point.
This all comes from personal experience, not empirical research, obviously, so you might find that your results differ from mine. If I complete all these 5 steps it's foolproof way for me to avoid any sort of hangover. However, step 1 is usually where I tend to go wrong. I end up having too many different kinds of drink and way too much of it and if you do that there's no preventing the morning hangover (though you can still soften it with the food and the water).jee

For what it's worth, I've only had one hangover that stayed with me for longer than an hour in the morning. Here's what I do:
Drink a bottle of water before I go drinking
Drink a bottle of water when I get back
Take some advil with the water
Eat some toast and peanut butter. You could probably eat anything, but at least peanut butter has protein in it.

Like most people said, hydrate yourself before bed and possibly take an aspirin. I think food soaks up the alcohol which might be good, (might be bad, I'm not a doctor) but I find eating and drinking (water) before bed always helps. Instead of your body processing beer and alcohol all night at least you're letting it process some sort of food.

You need to replace the salts and fluids lost through drinking alcohol. The worst place you can be is in a hot club, dancing and sweating away because you lose more salt and water from your body. Also as they don't have any laws here preventing chemicals being used in beer production, many beers can give an instant headache or worse hangover in the morning (namely Stella Artois). I find If I drink the British brewed stuff, I suffer worse than when I drink the Belgian imported (chemical free) stuff.
I find the best thing to do to prevent a hangover is:
Eat salty, fatty food with lots of protein to absorb all that shit. Kebabs, burgers and chips (fries) at the end of your night.
Get plenty of water inside you (I try for 4 pints)
As a cure if you're still feeling like shit in the morning, a full English breakfast with a bloody mary (vodka, tomato juice, tabasco, raw egg) will do it.
While hungover, as long as I'm not being sick, I find the best thing to do is get out and about and be active.
