Comcast to limit bandwidth and cut off P2P users

I was somewhat amazed that Comcast would start limiting bandwidth for subscribers, as well as cut-off access all together for users of P2P.

Why not nail down the badwidth hogs and charge them more money? Nope...they are just giving them warning with no contact info or dept. info to investigate the claims. You get a warning and poof! your history.

This should be a boost to Verizon DSL and Fios users. Verizon has no problems with this and will actually work with you and allow for greater bandwidth at a cost if you should require it.

Hughes Satellite users will never have to worry about this either, especially on the DL side.

I always hated Comcast and am happy that I never have had their service...in fact I made them come out and take thier crap cable off my property.

It's old news and somewhat new...Comcast HQ is in Philly and they are hitting local ppl in the metro and surrounding areas now as a test before they go full force.

They have done this across the country now for awhile, but are ready to now flex their cable muscles in this war on bandwidth.

Not like I care...as I said I never had Comcast.

Well that doesn't make sense if they're planning on a 250 Gigabyte cap for all users and charging for going over it but at the same time cutting off service entirely to P2P users... you don't break bandwidth records with web browsing and email.

im by no means a hard core torrent user, so maybe im just dumb in thinking that 250gb a month is quite a bunch to begin with. i guess if youre going avter high quality movies or something, thats one thing.

anyways, i have comcast and i want to take a steaming shit on their face

I love how they make note in that article:

"nonspecific warnings against generating excessive Internet traffic, but never defines what excessive is"

I DL and UL BT files, usually concerts and such...I do not come close to the 250 GB a month.

From what I have read though from other sources, is that the limitations Comcast is pursuing is an attempt to deny the use of P2P all together.

Many that had comcast on the sites I use are gone and or have switched providers to avoid the problems they have faced...they noted that they could still connect to a P2P, but would be dumped in intervals that made the DL or UL impossible.

They are in trouble as well financially now that they are being held responsible for the wild fires in CA:

The California Public Utilities Commission said the October fires were started because San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Cox Communications violated state regulations regarding the maintenance of power lines.
Two of the fires started when utility wires touched in strong winds, the commission said in a report released Tuesday. A third started when a tree limb fell onto one of the utility's power lines, the report said.

San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre said he plans to add Cox Communications to the city's lawsuit to recover $40 million in firefighting costs and damage to city property from SDG&E.
The utility is also fighting lawsuits from more than 300 fire victims.

I gotta admit I am quite happy with Verizon.

I consider myself a heavy user and I never break 150. Both Rogers and Bell the only two broadband providers in Ontario are charging for going over a cap but their prices are stupid. To get a package with a 90 gig cap it's something like 60 a month then 2-5$ per gigabyte going over the cap. Neither are having capacity issues. I think it's great that some ISPs are moving towards actual limits and some form of transparency but that 250 figure will soon be 150, 100 then 50 ect... it's funny that most of them can't price themselves out of the market because they are the market.

Even more info surfaces to the Comcast bullshit in todays news with Comcast appealing an FCC ruling on how they handled this debacle:

WASHINGTON - Comcast Corp. is appealing an FCC ruling that the company is improperly blocking customers' Web traffic, triggering a legal battle that could determine the extent of the government's authority to regulate the Internet.

In a precedent-setting move, a divided Federal Communications Commission last month determined that the company is violating a federal policy that guarantees unfettered access to the Internet.

Comcast challenged the FCC decision Thursday in the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington.

This should turn out to be an interesting case. I hope Comcast takes it up the ass though! The basis of this case was founded upon:

The Comcast case arose from complaints by users of a type of "file-sharing" software often used to download large data files, usually video.

Tests by The Associated Press and others found that file-sharing transmissions were aborting prematurely. It was later discovered that the company was cutting off transfers without informing customers.
The FCC noted Comcast's network management practices were "discriminatory and arbitrary" and that the company's practices "contravene industry standards and have significantly impeded Internet users' ability to use applications and access content of their choice."
