I think he has a lot of supporters here because of rising immigration populations in the GTA region over the last 20 years. I would like to think he has no chance in hell after everything but I think he still has a shot. There hasn't been a great public outcry like when Emerson crossed. Special elections would be too costly and again at the whim of a political party or candidate but they should probably stand as a Independent until the next election.

May probably won't be allowed in the debates again. The networks or Elections Canada need to work out some specific criteria for a party to be included. I think Stephen Dion made a big mistake by not running a Liberal in the riding she's contesting. There are so many laws and regulations for elections that are too ambiguous or easily violated without repercussion in this country.

The thing that bothers me about his whole election is that Harper's trying to justify it by blaming the opposition parties for holding up parliament and preventing anything from going through.

But if you look at the stats, this government has passed a steady amount of bills, definitely more than most minority governments. Look through recent parliamentary history and you'll find it's the Conservative MPs who have been introducing delays.

The worst is when he keeps saying the opposition is stopping his government from fulfilling the mandate given to him by the voters. The truth is there was no mandate. The people decided on a minority government, and it's functioning exactly as it is supposed to be. Take a look at his rhetoric and he sounds like he's speaking for a majority government, not someone with only 36.25% of the popular vote.

Harper's policies lean a bit closer to Bush than either McCain or Obama.

Am I only one who's seen the Harper commercial, and think it's just creepy? I mean really, aren't they suppose to edit them, or do a second take if he's mumbling like an idiot? Then at the end, they've got their token line - "We're better off with Harper".

What in the flying fuck is that suppose to mean lol? Are they going for a like, I'm a normal person that makes mistakes too, and because I admit it and don't act like I'm the best, then I must be better than the competition! I find the biggest way to make a voter hate you, is to make them feel like you're treating them as if they're a brain-damaged child. That's the impression I get from Harper. I personally have always said NDP all the way. If people don't start voting for them, we'll be stuck in the same 2 party system forever.

We tend to tear down people who try to act or seem too "good", even if they're deserving of acknowledgment. This unfortunately drives many to apathy and the worst of the worst into politics. So it's just another strategy. I don't think it will pay off, Harper is perceived as too cold and people in Ontario and Quebec will see it as a pandering to the rural far right, the two provinces that will decide which way this election goes.

The wildcard in this election will be the Green party that finally seems to be reaching a new level in relevance. The question is who which party will it draw voters from. Unfortunately, the most likely answer is the NDP. However, given how much Dion is investing in his own Green plan, I think the Green party will have a much bigger role in this election than anyone thought possible.

The green party is just a step away from communism. Much like in Europe be prepared for higher taxes in the name of stopping global warming, when that doesn't work and people start saying "why are we paying all these taxes if they aren't helping at all" you will find the error in your ways. The green party seeks to stomp your freedoms out by creating large government agencies that will do things like make sure your AC isn't too low, and make sure your heater isn't too hot during the winter. They will monitor and control the amount of pollution you emit into the air through your vehicles, and it will get the point where you are allotted a certain amount of gas credits you can use in a month, and will find yourself taxed even more heavily when you go over that said limit. You will be forced to reduce the power in your house by replacing your current lights with the new bulbs, that contain high levels of mercury and are extremely dangerous if they ever break. This right here, the fact that in the name of saving the globe, civil liberties are destroyed and removed from existence.

That won't happen anytime soon. The Green Party may be making progress towards legitimacy, but they're nowhere close enough to doing much besides draw votes away from the other parties. In fact, the Conservatives are probably hoping they'll do well just to draw votes away from the Liberals and NDP.

As for taking away freedoms and civil liberties, in the Canadian consciousness, the fears you're trying to spread (a tactic which really doesn't work as well in Canadian politics as it does in the States) don't really compare with the kinds of freedoms and liberties many Canadians are worried about the Conservative party taking away. Your scenario doesn't scare Canadians anywhere near something like the Patriot Act would.

Your country also isn't in any real threat of being attacked either, unless by chance a bomb in America happens to spread radiation in Canada at least. So basically after 9/11 the patriot act was needed, and has helped to keep us safe ever since that day.

Look, you're welcome to join in our discussions here, but if all you're trying to do is make a lot of noise with very little substance to prove some misguided point to the Canadian members of this forum who are posting in the American politics thread, then just stop before you lose any more of what little credibility you have. Come on, Wark, I've been feeding you enough in this thread for you to make an actual contribution, but I can only do so much.
