  • Daily show with Tony Blair

Did anyone catch The Daily Show last night?
Jon Stewart had Tony Blair as his guest for the last half of the show. It was pretty interesting to watch them go at it at first. Stewart seemed to be trying to pick apart his words, but Blair was up to the challenge and backed it all up. Seemed like pretty weak journalism, but after a bit he seemed to get better. They talked about Irani millitants in Iraq and some other serious stuff. Then he started talking about how he could be friends with Bush and it got pretty low class again. Asking questions like "What are his redeeming qualities that make you friends?" I thought he'd treat the guy with a little more respect, but then again he did kinda apologize and thank him profusely at the end of the show.

On another note i think it was later on the Colber Report, but they had a guy who's going up to the Int'l Space Station. I got to thinking, it's got to be pretty weird up there with the past few months and our growing tension with Russia, considering we share the only space station, and the only means to get to and from it (even relying more heavily on Russia since the Columbia burned up).

Your criticism would be on the nose if this were a real hard news show. But even Stewart has insisted it's not real journalism, but comedic satire.

I'm a fan of the Daily Show and I watched it yesterday and it was almost like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Jon Stewart, who usually is a halfway decent interviewer, asked the most innane questions I've ever heard. They broke for the first commercial break and I'm thinking 'oh alright, starting with benign shit and gonna move up,' but then they come back and Jon Stewart starts arguing with Mr. Blair over a bedrock of international relations, that no two democracies have ever fought a war against eachother. It's a point argued by political theorists over and over again, and it's true, and I'm pretty sure Stewart (a seemingly knowledgable guy) must have been aware of the concempt. After being disproved from that point, Stewart goes for a few easy (and forced) laughs while not really getting any substance from Blair.

I dunno, maybe I expect too much substance from a fake news show.

                On a similar note:

I thought the interview with Bill Clinton was pretty good. Kinda turned into a stump for a few minutes, but overall, i think it was much better. Also, in watching the reruns, either they edited it or i was a bit harsh. I guess the first time you see the trainwreck it seems much slower and gory.

Kinda said some of the stuff i've been noticing but failed to put together. Like how around here i can count a dozen or so large condos and housing complexes that have been built. Ten years ago, there might have been one or two, not 15. I had been asking myself, "Where are all these people coming from that are buying these expensive ass houses and condos?" I guess they were here all along, but couldn't get loans before. When they flooded the market, it became a whole lot easier to get one, and the condo companies did what they could to just fill up the buildings, regardless of who they picked to be tenets.

It kills me watching those idiots interview people sometimes. I wish they would joke-portion the first half and take their interviewees seriously. It was kind of funny at first but now it's just gimmicky. I pretty much agree on the Tony Blair one as well, "satire" or not. Unfortunately, Stewart and Colbert now have some degree of journalistic responsibility in my mind. I'm not trying to get preachy or anything I'm just saying that they should realize that they do have an impact beyond "satire," which, when done as poorly as they do sometimes, is as trite as FoxNews.

I couldn't even stand to finish Colbert's interview with Cornel West, a man whom I greatly respect, because the shitty humor was just so mind-numbing. It pained me to see Dr. West even have to address that bullshit.

All of this! They're seemingly intelligent people who have a grasp of politics and they should leave the jokes at the door when ex-presidents and world leaders sit at the desk.

My J2 teacher, who would always say that these shows weren't news, would also readily cite a study that found that Daily Show viewers were more knowledgable about foreign affairs than someone who watches the nightly news. The viewers aren't dumb, why not add a little substance to your show?
