  • kentucky seeks to censor the internet

    ...i recall a debate in the net neutrality thread about this...

    http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/...ap5458185.html

    Kentucky is asking to be given control of the top online gambling websites. Their reasoning is that Kentucky's famous gambling industry sees competition from the websites, who don't pay taxes. And the governor dislikes that the websites aren't creating jobs in Kentucky. And so the man whose health insurance and mahogany desk were paid for by the citizens of Kentucky proceeds to decry the online websites as "leeches".

    This is "political entrepreneurship", in which business seeks profit not by competition, but by trying to get political intervention on their behalf.

    If Kentucky actually gets permission, it's going to set an awesome precedent.

    KY is one f'd up state. All one has to do is look at the idiot KY Sr. Senator Micth McConnel to realize this.

    Odd how the Gov. has done nothing in regards to the safety regulations for mining in KY, not to leave out the residual contamination that is ruining the water tables, adding to birth defects as well as other adult illness's.

    The environmental policies of KY are a joke and the people always come last as a concern. It all boils down to monies made at the expense of the people and environment.

    Why should gambling get a priority? Because the State is losing revenues perhaps? These elected weasels have nothing better to do. I frankly do not buy into:

    Kentucky, home to the Kentucky Derby, already has a state lottery and allows gambling at horse tracks and bingo halls. Blocking internet gambling sites in Kentucky would "protect the signature industry," Beshear said.
    May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

      Gambling = Money
      The end.

      Not nearly as far-reaching this reminds me of when the banned indoor smoking in New Jersey. The law said that smoking indoors was detrimental to non-smoker patron's health and thus banned it inside any establishment. However, it excluded the states smokiest establishments: casinos.

      I asked a state senator about it once and he fed me some bullshit about finding places to put designated smoking areas outdoors and representing his constinuency and blah blah blah. And then I asked him if they had looked into wether or not casinos would lose revenue if they were included, surprise surprise, the senate had and within a week they had also introduced an ammendment to exclude casinos from the law.

          How is that possible? Companies like Comcast control the bandwith so how can Kentucky tell them that these people aren't allowed to go on these particular sites?

          Meh Kentucky kinda blows anyway.

          edit: oh take control of the domain names eh? Sneaky, sneaky. I doubt it'll work.

            They could have their customers connect using their IP, make a new domain name or use Tor to circumvent it. Unless they're willing to create some sort of blacklist at the ISP level stealing some domains won't do much of anything.
