INDIANAPOLIS — A convicted sex offender died Sunday during a struggle with a father who found the naked man in or near his 17-year-old daughter's bedroom, police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount said Meyers had a heart condition and may have had a heart attack. An autopsy was planned.Police said Meyers was naked except for a mask and latex gloves and had entered the home through a window near the girl's bedroom with rope, condoms and a knife. He was familiar with the home's layout because it belonged to a relative, police said.

Leave it to FoxNews to think that a nearly-assaulted girl's church habits are newsworthy when a man is dead.

A couple of problems there:
1/ The story was written by the Associated Press, not Fox. That means that other news sites may be running the same piece with the same words, such as the Chicago Sun-Times and the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
2/ The condition of the daughter, who was in the room at the time, is newsworthy. And it's the father who said she went to church, so they're reporting the fact. If she went to work, or if it was a weekday and he said she went right to school, it would have said that instead.

Meh, I guess I didn't pay attention to the AP tag. I still think it's funny that AP ended the news article with that quote from the father. But the cool thing still is the fact that some badass killed a naked guy with his bare hands.

yeah that's basically a lot of the problem if the AP write a story that comes up on the 'wires' the newsroom doesn't have 'a lot' to go on other than what they read on the wire.

It's called the "inverted pyramid" style of reporting. This format places as much of the key information as possible in the opening paragraph (the "lead"). The farther down the article, the less vital the information. That's because sometimes there's not enough room to fit the whole original story in the space allotted, so editors often have to cut information, and that's easy to do with the inverted pyramid style because all you need to do is cut from the bottom. In this example, the state of the daughter is newsworthy, but as you said, the thing that made this story stand out was that the sex offender died in the struggle.

The father's final statement wasn't exactly a quote, but a description of what he said instead, suggests to me that the father's exact words included the daughter's name. In news like this, the victim's name is usually omitted.

Secondly, I see a common theme on these forums that just astounds me. The value of human life is indeed important and should be defended, but it seems to me that some of you would almost rather see the girl raped and possibly murdered before having someone execute impulsive vigilante justice.

If you think about it the whole church thing is very fitting because it not only describes her condition but also alludes to the idea that she's sitting in church thanking her lucky stars she didn't get raped, which would suck.

I probably am assuming too much from Gen's comment, but my conclusion from reading it was that he places more importance on the death of this scoundrel then on the girl's well-being. This case in particular struck me as odd that Gen would, assuming he does, find the death of this man an unacceptable measure since it seems that the father didn't even intend to kill. However, I am probably just reading too far into Gen's comment and revealing my regretful tendency to prejudge others' comments.
