I've been using the Focus attack to make forward progress under Akuma's aerial fireballs. I've been running into a lot of people who just jump back and drop them, so I use the focus to close distance.

Also of note: I just saw Izor is ranked like top 1,000th on the Leaderboards for BP. I'm like 32,000th lol.

I've always been a shoto player. I never understood the advantages of a charge-type player. Someone posted this on another forum that I found very helpful for those who would like to start using charge characters.

Firstly, charge diagonally down backwards. You're harder to read, you can crouch guard if you need to, and crucially you're charging down and backwards at the same time. So for Blanka, I always have the horizontal ball, the vertical ball and the backstep roll charging at the same time, giving me three options at a moment's notice.

Second, if there's any point in the match where you can be charging, then for god's sake charge. For example, let's say do the horizontal roll (charge back, forward and punch). As soon as Blanka starts rolling I'm charging down/back. By the time I get back on my feet after hitting or having the roll blocked, I'm ready to go again with any of my three rolls. The horizontal roll often makes the opponent jump towards you after it hits or is blocked because they want to close the space between you down. As soon as I land from the horizontal roll I'm ready to fire off the vertical one if they decide to jump. As soon as I land from that I'm good to fire off another horizontal one if I really want to.

If you charge sensibly and always have your next move in mind, you should be able to fire off your specials with the same response time as someone using a rotation character not bound by charging. I've surprised a fireball spammer by doing the EX horizontal roll (which has invincibility/temporary armour and passes right through projectiles) and then doing it again the second I land. After he blocks the first one he fires a fireball because he figures I can't do it again until I've charged for another second or two, so it's then quite surprising to eat another one right away with no discernible charging time.

If you're throwing someone, you should be charging. If you're jumping towards your opponent, you should be charging. Am I making the point clear yet? Heh.

Second point, you can bust out a special and a super/ultra off one charge.

For instance, one of Balrog's simple super cancels is to do the charging straight (charge backwards, forward and punch) and then follow up with his super (charge backwards, forward back forward punch). This should be impossible because if you hit the first move at close range, there's not enough time to then charge the super and have it connect while the first special is still happening.

        The trick is thus:

Charge back, press forward and punch. As the punch connects or fairly quickly after you fire it off, quickly input forward back forward punch. The initial special will cancel right into the super and you've only had to charge the once.

You'll notice one of E. honda's trials asks for him to torpedo and cancel into the super torpedo. This can only realistically be achieved using that method.

Similarly, Balrog's headbutt move (charge down, up and punch) can be comboed into his ultra. So you charge down-back, go to up-forward for the headbutt, then do forward back forward and all three punches. Two moves and a devastating juggle combo off one charge.

        Other stuff:

Any charging move can be charged before the guy says "FIGHT!" at the beginning of the round. Including supers and ultras if you want to chance that. I wouldn't recommend it, but occasionally you'll totally blindside someone.

Charging moves can be charged when you're knocked down. Charge down or down back when you're on the deck, then fire off the move the second your feet are back on the ground. I sometimes do Blanka's EX vertical ball on wake-up and it gets me tonnes of reversals and counters on surprised opponents. You'll notice a lot of shotos do dragon punches as soon as they get up, well charging characters can do it too. Blanka's EX vertical ball is a lot safer too because it knocks you back if blocked, hits or hit-trades with almost all attacks, and gets you a decent distance away if you totally whiff it. Don't do it EVERY time like some of the idiot Ken players, but bear it in mind.

If you jump over an opponent's head for a cross-up, don't forget to keep holding forward if possible, so when you land on the other side you'll be about ready to hit one of your specials.

I sometimes approach a crouch guarding opponent like this:

Me on the left, him on the right. He's crouch-blocking, so will block attacks from the left.

I jump over him with a well-timed medium kick and keep holding forwards (right). My trailing knee will kick hit his right side, negating his block. I then combo this into standing medium kick (which is Blanka's double knee strike), all whilst still holding right. I can then immediately follow up the knees with an EX horizontal ball aimed left because I've been charging the whole time.

I'm not tournament level or anything, but there's some bread and butter charging tips for the potential charging user. Please do it, more chargers = less Kens.

I should note that I'm using a Hori EX2 fighting stick rather than a pad, and this certainly makes things much easier. As soon as I jump forward I can sort of "slam it into reverse", and the holding and firing of charging specials feels so natural when you can flick the clicky and precise arcade stick at will. The flick forward takes a fraction of a second and then you can instantly lean it back into another charge before your first special has even got going. It feels a hell of a lot less natural doing this on a d-pad or thumbstick in my experience.

I could write for days on this game. I love beat'em ups that little bit more than is healthy I feel. Oh well, hope it was useful.
I'm trying to work on my Balrog but I just can't seem to perfect my timing. I'm just using the Xbox D-pad so it's probably a tad more difficult.

Haha. I'm what you would call a casual gamer. But I'm saving up for one right now. Although I probably won't get one till I'm done with the semester. Once I buy a decent joystick, I'll probably be playing till my eyes bleed.

Anyone else just start up Arcade mode to play multiplayer rather than just going straight to "Xbox Live Online"?

I tried finding matches on my own at first and connected to 1 of every 10. Either "match full" or "Match not available". I then just set my arcade mode to Ranking Match and I can't even get past the first fight, lol.

Hmmm. I've never really given the 360 joystick a chance. I guess it's because I'm just used to playing Street Fighter II on the SNES.

BTW. What characters do you guys use? I'm the most comfortable with Ryu but I'm about as mediocre as I can get with that guy. That's why I've decided to work on Balrog/Boxer. I've won a few matches with Abel but he's a very conservative player and I tend to lose my gameplan and get aggressive.

I'm having the most fun with Guile, Blanka and Zangief at the moment! Getting used to charging 24/7 takes a bit of getting used to... e.g. You should be charging *instantly* after you do a jump, etc.

No one really cares about your announcements of SSFIV. Go to SRK instead of looking to attentiion whore/pick on scrubs here.

Not to mention you're late as fuck. I sampled SSFIV with Juri back in Oct @ CFC NYC, along with US release TvC.

Izor, come see me on PSN.

Going to ECT/Evo2k10. See you there.
