Since it's your second go at it, try looking for the smiley faces scattered throughout the book. It's a bit surprising to see how many of them there are.

And about the ending, I'm normally a bit keen on endings and I usually do a good job of figuring out things, but this is probably the only novel where I had absolutely no clue of what was going to happen in the end. Will be very interesting how Snyder will incorporate this into the movie. I'm sure the average movie goer will probably be put-off by it after seeing it in theaters. Let's just say that it's not a very good Hollywood ending for those of you who have yet to read it.

Apparently Zak Snyder is taking a different approach to the end and having Dr. Manhattan become the great force Earth can unite to fight. It jives with him leaving Earth because they can scapegoat him even though that isn't the reason he chooses to leave. I kinda like that better than the mutant squid/vagina that attacks New York in the end. There's still going to be a lot of bodies and blood.

The book really got to me though. It poses a lot of really good questions about God and the world in the post-nuclear age. When Rorschach got zapped I was really disappointed, but overall a really good book.

Do you have a link to where you got that information? I'm not accusing you of giving me misinformation but I just don't see how it will make sense considering it totally takes away Ozy's whole diabolical scheme of protecting the universe. I can see Snyder probably substituting the squid vagina for another more reasonable creature but not with the big blue douche. Perhaps a better explanation will shut me up and make me eat my own words for questioning Snyder's direction. Snyder put up some extra trailer footage during the Scream Awards on Spike last night. It gives me chills, it's so good.

can you explain the ending a little better for me? i get everything up until the scene in the newsroom, and the last frame where the kid looks at the diary. who's diary is it? is it an earlier reference in the book?

ok after looking into it for like 10 mins, it seems to be Rorschach's diary. which is weird to me, because the cover of it says "1984" but when the book opens, the diary entries are dated in 1985. Guess it's a minor detail.

How did they get the diary in the first place? Was that a scene I've forgotten? Is it supposed to imply that they will discover Veidt's plan? Would that even be possible? Did rorschach even have time to write anything that would lead them to that conclusion?

went back and painstakingly looked for those few scenes with the newspaper people and eventually saw that one too. Was a great book, though I'm regretting having read it one chapter a week basically, while stoned and about to fall asleep.

I haven't done research on this unreliable source's claims yet, so I could be completely and utterly wrong, because he also mentioned something about a secret Star Wars Christmas Special movie that never "made the light of day." He said I can go on Youtube and look at small glimpses of it, but I'm too lazy and just don't give a hoot.

He clearly mailed his diary right after he came from Veidt's office, so you probably just overlooked it. I understand because the suspense was getting good. And to prevent confusion, the journal actually reads "1984 - 1985". Although, it's funny because the newspaper he mailed the journal to, has a very conservative bias and Rorschach is basically their only fan, so you wonder how much weight that journal will carry. But hey, that's what ambiguous endings are all about.

Movie was f'ing awesome. drove an hour away to see it on IMAX. they did change the ending a bit, but not too drastically. Missed the first few minutes but beyond that it seemed to be 95% accurate. A few memorable lines moved around, but very authentic. I loved the casting, thought it really made NightOwl and Silk Spectre's characters more appealing than in the book. Rorshach's annoying "christian bale batman" voice was about the only thing that bugged me besides the missing pirate comic subplot.
