  • What do other canadians think about this?

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...y/?query=Crime

I can't stand reading something like this, because I know if I was the one stuck in that position, I would be going nuts. We're sitting over there cleaning up their country, and they have the gaul to hold an innocent reporter in jail for such trivial reasons? This is the sort of thing that our PM needs to bring his fist down hard. Honestly, tell them straight up, release that innocent man, or we pull all our guys out of your country shitheads. I doubt they'd hold one journalist if we threatened to pull out. This is exactly the sort of thing a good PM needs to act on, immediatly, and decisively.

EDIT- LOL I was shown this and told he was canadian, upon further reseach, I realize that it doesn't say that anywhere. I believe he's Afghani. Either way, I still stand by what I said. No way in hell this should be happening, and Canada is just as capable as the states in this particular position to use some power and say let the innocent man go.

Yeah I was wondering why you asked for only Canadian opinions. Even if he was Canadian the forum is open for everyone to comment.

A couple years of occupation and reconstruction wasn't going to drastically alter their society. If there is no real freedom on the ground there so that people can question issues like the rights and role of women within their culture, without getting a gun pointed at their head, then the political system we've helped them create is meaningless and a waste of time and money. The judiciary is appointed by the president and if Karzai didn't know enough to NOT to stack it with fundamentalist then he's a fucking idiot and we should pressure him to dissolve it.

Even now though, I still wonder what Canadians think over other people. It's not often we're in a position where we hold international weight like this. The States are all over, so yeah, they can easily say let him go in a situation like this - but why can't Canada step up and show some balls here? Our guys are dying in that country, while we fight to help them establish a democracy - and they're pulling this sort of thing? I would really like to see our PM, be the first to act on this. Not just wait for the UN, or States to say something, and then fall in behind as usual. Step up, man up, and let's tell these Afghans to stop being complete fucking idiots or we're out! I just don't like seeing an oppourtunity for Canada to do something like this, and watch it being ignored. Harper sucks.

It was a sad day when Dr. Sima Samar lost her post as minister of Women Affairs. Samar was working with people to train women in any possible way, providing shetler, education, a trade, and a sense of security to thousands of women. Karzi is nothing more than a puppet. At the first sign of the fundamentalists spreading propaganda she was removed from her post.

This is a really sad situation and only emphasizes the fact that as much as we want Afghanistan to progress there is so many people unwilling to let the country progress.
it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did

You cannot force democratic change upon a people, democratic change must come from the people themselves.

You can promote it and support programs that show real vitality in promoting peace and democracy. There's so many ways of actually prompting change with the smallest amounts of money. But first you need a strong government that doesn't compromise your efforts within that country.
