I completely see what you're saying.

A few years ago the same thing happened here. We only get snow accumulation once every 5-10 years, so it's not like we prepare a whole lot (sand/salt for roads, plows, preventative tree care). Also, when it hits no one knows what to do (and they can't do it anyway, we have 3 plows for the entire state).

So yeah, a few years ago we get an "ice storm" where like 1-3 inch ice formed on literally everything outside. Giant oak tree in my side yard came crashing down, along with about one tree per every lot in the entire city. Also, we have like zero underground power utilities. There's hardly any ice, so they don't bother to bury cables in places where they could break do to trees or the shear weight of the ice.

So what happens differently for ppl up north is that their utilites are constantly hit by ice related problems and they are constantly fixing them. Here where it rarely ices/snows, five to ten years' worth of dead limbs and weak powerlines come down all at once. It's the equivalent of a hurricane coming through.

we had level 2 emegerncy last wednesday, we havent had a day over 18 degrees in week. Last week it was -4 degrees without windchill...-20 with lol... its so dam annoying..
