I need a headphone amplifier

Dear internet friends,

I'm currently searching for a good headphone amp to go with my sennheiser 650s. I'm currently using a small portable amp thats suited for on-the-go listening, but I would like something much stronger for listening at home. Preferably audiophile grade, whatever that means.

There's a lot of brands out there, and I was wondering if any of you have a preference. My price range is somewhere around $300.

Can't say I have heard the 650's, although they are very tempting to purchase, but I've heard that you should be prepared to invest quite a bit into a amp for it for it to sound the best they can.

However, if you visit the forum at Headfi.org, there are plenty of headphone enthusiasts that might be able to guide you in the right direction. Here are some threads I found about amping the 650's:

Sweet! Thanks! I ended up purchasing a darkvoice 336SE, a mini to RCA cable, and an external x-fi soundcard. I will probably upgrade the tubes in there sometime later, but the reviews for it were generally positive.

The only sucky part was that it's built to order, and is being shipped from china. I just hope it arrives without being damaged.

If you got it from Head-Direct (just saw it as I was browsing about), you should be in good hands. Made a purchase with them and the guy (Fang) is a pretty good dealer. Gave me a wrong tracking number but gave him a quick email and he fixed things up right away.

I've bought stuff from head-direct as well and Fang is def helpful. Buying second hand from head-fi members is great as well.

not if you have 300ohm headphones. turning up the volume on your laptop or ipod won't do jack.

Get a pair of Koss PortaPro and youll have sound close to the Seinheisers that you can go out with. it is the best small size one in the world.
