Spending four years of life trapped in a fortress surrounded by a ten-foot tall fence, with no contact from the outside world except the overnight stays at home. The social ladder exists in any type of environment, ranging from a jail all the way to schools; people are always trying to compete with one another, trying to gain more points whether it is while playing a simple basketball game, or while socializing amongst a group of friends. When trying to earn social points amongst a group of friends, people are trying to climb higher up on the social ladder. Essentially, the social ladder is a ladder with different “Social Rankings” at each rung. The higher the position on the social ladder, the more respect and popularity one will receive by almost everyone else, but there are always the select few that thrive to be at the top and cannot stand the fact that others are praying on their position.
Acres upon acres of this fortress are surrounded by a dreaded ten-foot tall fence all the way around. The outside of the fence is surrounded by parking lots, and in the distance, there is a road that gets congested with traffic at quarter ‘till three and some of the people that were held in the fortress are set free. In order to get into the fortress from the main entrance, one has to climb a series of steps, and then they must be granted permission from the guard standing on the other side of the dreaded fence to enter. Once this is done, the guard will open the fence door, letting one enter. Once inside of the fortress, there is a building to the left, and an identical building to the right. As one walks forward, they will notice a smaller building on there right side labeled “Admissions”. This is where all the inmates’ are admitted. Proceeding north from there, one will see a building equal in size labeled “Counseling”. This is where all the inmates get their counseling done. As one continues to roam around the premises, they will see a pool area, dining area, some more brick buildings, and a mural of an Indian figure on a horse labeled “Braves”.
The morning commences, and the social ladder is exposed as all the inmates file into the quad area to socialize with each other in their own groups. After many minutes of socializing, a bell sounds and everyone disperses. Now there is nothing around except for the occasional inmate making a restroom run, and the seagulls flying overhead looking for any form of edible food to gnaw on. A bell sounds again, and for eight minutes everyone scrambles around, rushing to get to their second period cell. Another bell sounds and once again, silence rules the premises. Forty-Five minutes later, another bell rings, everyone scrambles again, but this time half of the people stay in the quad area. Some wait in lines to be served food, others stand around socializing. During this time, most people eat “Normal” foods, but there is a select few that are standing besides the tallest tree on the premises in a circle. In the middle of this circle, there is a person that is holding a clear bag. Looking closer at this bag, one will notice that there is a live goldfish in it. The gentleman opens the bag and drinks the bags contents, water and the live goldfish that was in the bag. The circle of people cheer and the fish eater raises his arms in victory.
Another bell rings, and this begins the second half of the day. The people that are in the quad right now are dispersing and a new flood of people enters the quad areas. Some waiting in lines, and others once again socializing in their groups. This time, a fight breaks out between three people. A circle of spectators form, chanting “Fight, fight, fight”, one of the people reaches into their bag and pulls a knife out. At this time, the guards are trying to get through the crowd of spectators. One of the guards in particular raises his elbows and runs into the crowd, granting him entry to the inner circle, where the fight is taking place. Once he has penetrated, he tackles the fighter holding the knife. The other guards get into the circle and they grab the other two people. They place handcuffs on the three men and escort them to the counseling building. Soon after, the circle fades into sub groups that continue to talk about the fight. A swarm of seagulls fly overhead and everyone scrambles for cover. A seagull releases a turd-bomb aiming for a vulnerable victim. The turd-bomb successfully hits the victim and she cries in fear knowing that she was just knocked down one rung of the social ladder. Another bell sounds, and everyone disperses. Eight minutes later, the bell sounds again and this commences fifth period. Now, the seagulls walk around the premises again, scavenging for food. The occasional person walks by, scaring the birds away. A series of other bells rings, starting and ending sixth period and all the some of the inmates leave at this time.
The social ladder is an intangible force that everyone knows exists. Some people obey the laws of the social ladder, others neglect the laws. These laws being: 1. If you stand out in a crowd, you loose points on the social ladder. 2. If you take a leadership role in a group of people you will move up on the social ladder. When that gentleman ate the goldfish, his rankings went up. It went up because he took a leadership role. He wanted to take a leadership role and begin a fish eating trend. The gentlemen was “Man of the week”, everyone was talking about him for a week. Soon after he did such, another gentleman ate two live goldfish at the same time, and he became the new “Man of the week”, and he is respected because he ate the fish.
The social ladder exists all around the world: in jails, in schools, in the workplace, and even in families. People are always trying to compete with each other, to earn respect between one another. The more social points one has, the higher they will stand on the social ladder, and they will be more respected in society.
