  • Gaming through the internet streamed to your TV

    http://kotaku.com/5181300/onlive-mak...sis-on-your-tv

Like you'll play your game on a computer that's not where you're at. Sort of like a console PC. You will have a bluetooth controller or something of the sort. Your commands will go through the internet to the computer then will stream the video back to your TV in full HD.

I feel the lag time will kill this and I don't know how this can possibly work effectively, but it seems like a bunch of developers have bought onto this. Should be interesting.

I was reading up on this in the google sci/tech section just minutes earlier. It's an interesting premise but I don't see it going into full 3D shooters or RTS games where lag is a big issue - however, if everyone playing the game has the same lag ~500ms, hopefully they figure out how to "adjust" the lag in multiplayer games, much like guitar hero or rock band.

Otherwise, it looks like a pretty good idea for games where quick reflexes isn't absolutely required - like RPGs, puzzle adventure games like Myst and Syberia, etc.

This is very interesting indeed, but I can't see how this is going to work out technically. Running a game like Crysis in itself requires a high end computer, and I don't see how a superserver can run several Crysis clients at once. It's common knowledge that after you've spent around 1000$ on a computer you'll start to get alot less performance for your money. The server park for something like this would have to consist of several thousands computers all ready to launch Crysis at maxed settings.

I don't think that the streaming part is a bigger problem. Connections gets better all the time, I started out with a 64k ISDN connection and now I have 20mbit. If they can find an efficient way of using the full power of modern, good connections it should be enough to stream the data.

      Nice find, Dameon.

With quad cores and what nots it's possible to use virtualization to create several
        servers on one computer.

The developer of Dwarf Fortress already implemented this, but he also implemented 'beards grown on dwarves' and 'tooth decay' so I'm not surprised. If you have a computer more than 2 years old, don't dare to look at this game, your FPS will be dwindled to 0 in less than an hour wasting away at this. No dual-core processor programming <_<

Great for turn based games, awful for everything else until we get a a couple of CORPORATE companies that can work together.
