  • Pontiac gone...GM kills off this div.

GM now dumps Pontiac and cuts 23,000 jobs. The rumour was out this past Friday about this GM move and since hearing this I have been watching the cars on the road to notice how many Buicks vs Pontiacs I see, be it driving or in a parking lot.

Pontiac outnumbers Buick hands down from my observations.

So GM who is struggling to stay afloat 1st cuts Oldsmobile out, then Saturn...not my favorite car, but none the less a moneymaker in todays economy for GM and now Pontiac?

It's keeping Buick (old man car)? Why?? It's also keeping Hummer? another loser in their crap line of auto's. Chevy? oh please! I have not seen a decent Chevy on the road in ages...bow tie my ass...f'n ugly ass cars with chrom accents thrown on the body for no particular reason. Chevy has what? The Cobalt, Corvette and the new Camaro? pfft!

It makes me wonder who the hell is running this shit company into the ground.

Time to stop bailing the auto industries out regardless of the impact on unemployment. As long as the people running GM think with their ass, then f'm.

An era has ended. Anyone holding on to a 64 - 68 Pontiac GTO...hold on to them as the price is gonna skyrocket!
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

Odd strategic choice, but imho Pontiac hasn't produced anything worthwhile since the 70's either.

I can see Hummer and Buick following suit soon though, I can't see GM being able to sustain those either.

Chevy has a few decent cars, and like it or not, the Corvette does sell.

Main reason they got rid of Pontiac, is because all the pontiac cars are re-badged Chevy, Holden, etc....

I have not seen a decent Chevy, other than possibly a truck, since the 1970's.

The Pontiac G series blows away basically all of Chevy's production cars IMHO. I am not an American car fan, so don't get me wrong. In driving the roads here in the States...may be different in Finland? Pontiacs are all over the roads alog with Saturn when comparing it to Buicks and Chevy (cars) on the road & mall parking lots. The Pontiac Vibe, Solstice, G3, G6 & G8 are not a bad line of autos available The Chevy Impala, Malibu, HHR (of which was a rip-off of the Chrysler PT Cruiser but uglier), Cobalt and Aveo are not impressive to look at and drive IMHO, as I have had the chance to test drive these.

The Corvette does ok...not like everyone has $48,000.00 to over 100,000.00 to blow on a Corvette, so it does sell, but the market for it notes that it's not a big big seller. It does sell to a certain clientelle, but not to the mass of drivers looking for a regular petrol car that can get 25+ MPG.

Coming from an art school background in design, the Chevy line is not attractive in its interior as well as it's exterior appearance and overall design.

GM abviously wants to keep it's truck lines and hold on to Chevy since that bullshit car called the Volt is supposed to make an appearance. Amazing that the Volt will be electric/Hybrid and not even come close to what Ford, Honda, Nissan, Toyota have been able to do in the mileage and overall costs for such things; the Volt will sell for much more than all the other hybrids on the market for less milage and performance.

I miss my '90 Pontiac Firebird. It had the angled body style, just before they changed to that flaccid curvy garbage. It was the only car I've owned that could accelerate up a hill.

The base corvette can be had for less than 40k, and the car does get 25+ mpg highway for the base 430hp c6 engine. Which is pretty nice considering the performance. Also, there really isn't another car in this price range that gives you what this car gives you.

I'm just saying cuz I bought my dad one for his retirement.

I was about to say, the firebird was a pretty cool car back in the day. All they needed to do was to redesign the firebird and make one of the Transformers in the next movie to turn into one and boom, back in business.

I am in agreement with you on the Aztek. I mean...who in Pontiacs board room viewed this car's design layout and said "We have a winner"??? Fugliest thing I had seen on the road in many a year.

And in regards to Bio's note on the Corvette, when did you buy this for your father, as the base price of a `09 Corvette is $49,415.00, of which takes Premium gas. I personally can't fit in a Vette comfortably and is one of the reasons why I became a fan as well as an owner of Porsches. BTW...the Porsche Cayman is somewhat close to a base price of a Vette, but with better looks IMHO and handling in wet weather and cornering

Buicks do quite well in China, they are considered luxury cars and you see them everywhere. Actually I wonder why they don't sell the same Buicks here, because in China they really are quite nice.

Considering China is like the only place where GM is making tons of money, they have a good reason to keep selling Buicks.

On the bright side, the fall of GM will hopefully also be the fall of their respective unions. These institutions are outdated and, in my opinion, only hurt the automobile company. There comes a time when coalitions like these, that once served a good purpose, only stick around just because they have been around a long time and wish to continue. They have become a hinderance, and I, for one, hope that they disband.

i kinda agree scoop, BUT at the same time without the unions the employees dont get the pay the should be getting or the hours or rights, but ur right the unions are outdated and a little overboard with alot of the shit the try and pull and do hurt the company a little
