What left wing rhetoric? I'm not a socialist, nor am I overly left leaning. I'm centrist, you'd know that if you had a conversation with me. But why would you want to do that? You're great at making assumptions about people and their countries.

That's exactly why you need some sort of education, if not in school then in life. Go to Europe, Canada, or any other country you consider socialist and see how unique and different these countries, or don't and keep making a fucking fool of yourself.

Because it is like double paying, you pay extra in taxes to get the socialized health care and then you end up putting even more of your money up front to go to a better doctor (or the privatized doctor). So basically if your terrible public doctor can't fix you, or the public doctor can't schedule you for a visit for six months, or you are deemed not worth fixing for being too old or too sick then you have to shell out money to get the kind of service that we get in America without having to pay another 5-10% in taxes for.

Not sure about other countries, but in Aus people recieve large tax rebates for having private health insurance. So they are not paying double.

In America, at least where I live we don't get tax rebates for having health insurance, the only money that isn't taxed is a 401k or a Roth IRA that you are investing in to.

i don't wanna thread-jack this thread, but i gotta talk about american healthcare for a sec.

i found out something very interesting about american healthcare. apparently back in the 70's, there was a big demand for healthcare reform, and for it to be provided to more americans. a noble enough goal, one i might even support, but like all things government, it didn't work out that way.

because while the people wanted healthcare, do our representatives listen to the people? well - they heard the calls for something to be done. but 'the masses' just demanded healthcare - without specifying how it was to be done. (you can't blame people - they're not all economists or politicians)

this is where the lobbyists stepped in. in particular, lobbyists for so-called "health maintenance organizations". these organizations - HMO's - were first conceived of as a way to connect a patient with healthcare by providing insurance plans and doctors who would accept them. HMO's - much like the fractional-reserve bank - is an idea that sounds great... in theory. in reality, they were so cumbersome, inefficient, and just plain expensive that noone used them. that is, until their lobbyists stormed washington. they saw an opportunity - the public's demand for healthcare - and exploited it by pimping their system to the representatives of our government.

and so we got the HMO act of '73, which required all businesses over the size of 25 employees to provide HMO coverage.

so when you look at American healthcare and why it's so shitty, think about it. businesses generally rise to the top by selling better products at a better price. some can't do both - maybe they can do it cheaper, maybe they can do it better. maybe a business gets to the top by developing a new method of efficiency that simply allows them to expand their consumer market.

HMO's possess none of the traits. it was a bad business model - i'm pretty sure most HMO's are nonprofit - that gained an artifical edge, because of government intervention. how are we supposed to build a system on top of it?

recently, a doctor in new york found himself in trouble with the law. his crime? providing unlimited monthly care for a cheap, set fee. the doctor has apparently found a way to remain profitable, while providing an incredible service. yet, according to NY law... this qualifies as "insurance" so he must meet federal regulations, file paperwork, etc... all of which will raise his operating costs, meaning he won't be able to provide this service.
