some occupations may be useless - by what standards?

if a job was useless, it wouldn't be done. if a service was useless, it wouldn't be purchased.

Like the industry I am in - finance. Does it create much value? Do investment bankers make 2 million dollars worth of value a year as indicated by their pay checks? With 2 million I am sure you can buy a lot of bread, chicken, beef. Sure we can not say an investment banker creates 10 times more value than farmers because farmers tend to make less than 10% of what an investment bankers make, right?

What about those lawyer? ... and tax accountants? ... and George W. Bush, you paid him 300 grand a year for 8 years, because he created whole lots of value for the U.S?

A modern working mum will sacrifice seeing her children in return for a nicer house and car.

So you make 1/2 million bonus as a software developer?
I find that a bit hard to believe. In fact, i dare you to scan a paycheck.

Learn to read, I said I work with people who make 1/2 million bonus a year.

Also, you might have worked in banks/are working for one. But do you have a lot of front office experience? Are you familiar with automated trading systems? Do you know the term algorithmic trading?

A lot of algorithmic trader/quant developers are mathematicians who are also developers. If you are one of them, and if you are good, I am sure 1/2 million a year is not hard to obtain.

She must be a Math Major as well as a CS Major maybe? Because where I work, the Math Majors make more than everyone else excluding middle management (which is around $250,000+) and the executives (no clue! ridiculous stock options though).

In the company I work for, people who make a lot of money are the traders, and they are nice towards the developers and women.

Take away your finance and banking work and can you do anything at all besides work in the finacial industry? You mention Engineering? Well what kind of Engineering? Real Engineering to me deals with building codes and making sure components of an architectural or mechanical nature hold up to the specified extremes necessary. Your engineering degree must not be related to what most think of when the word "Engineer" is mentioned...and if it is, why would you go from Engineering to Finance? That's like going from a lawyer to a bathroom attendant.

Have I not thought of doing something outside finance? But do you really think other industry would really be much better? I have chosen finance because I liked it ... even though now I think about it research & development probably suits me more. Well, too damn late to change now <_<

You're obviously not enjoying yourself. Also I think no matter how much money you make, you will not be happy, because your bosses, the traders will make much more. It's never too late to change careers, hell you're younger than me.

Oh but people in finance can hardly drink enough - especially the front office people. They also tend to be lousy liars.

Okay, thanks for the concerns and all these: get out of the industry.

Maybe I have been misleading, I am not exactly complaining the industry I am in, no matter how transient, ephemeral it might be. I have chosen it to start with and to be honest, I like to hang around with assertive & intelligent people which unfortunately finance tends to attract.

But let's be realistic, in which industry you wouldn't have some selfish, egoistical, materialistic bastards? Unless I work for myself, it's unlikely I would be able to escape the bureaucracy too.

I am not trying to be a whinger, and I do want to make a positive difference. What I original intended to discuss was whether the society could, maybe by organize in some other ways, to maximize the output for the same amount of labor we are putting in.

Be more specific, can we eliminate some of those useless professions (e.g. the cumbersome structure of government) and automate some others (finance, accounting, law etc), and maybe we could produce more useful things for everyone?

yes I'm sure there aren't younger asian chicks with bigger tits/look better than you/are sluttier than you with less experience that would get hired within a month of you leaving the way the economy around the world is right now. And when I say I'm sure there aren't, I'm sure there are.

Sure there are younger, hotter asian girls around, there are a LOT of them too. But there aren't too many smarter & more interesting ones around ... and let me to be straight with you, there are NONE that I have encountered!
