I liked it. I thought the film kept a good pace. The actors didn't try to mimic their predecessors, which was something I was worried about. I don't have a problem with the plot or the time travel elements, though I wished the villain had more development.

The special effects were great, the sound effects especially. Sound usually takes a back seat to the visuals, but they really stood out for me. I saw the film at an AMC theatre with "Enhanced Theatre Experience" which is supposed to have a higher resolution than regular theatres and 11-channel surround sound with 57,000 watt power. I'm not sure how that compares with regular theatres, but when they went to warp, it sounded amazing.

But when did Winona Ryder become old enough to play Zachery Quinto's mom?

Something else I noticed: you know how commercials for movies often recite quotations from reviews to say how good they are? One commercial I saw for Star Trek quoted a reviewer saying it's "this generation's Star Wars".

Now, I'm not a big Star Trek or a Star Wars fan, but my impression always was that fans of one series don't like it being compared to the other.

I like both but it's just Hollywood pandering to get idiots to go watch Star Trek because I guess it's the geekier of the two (probably because someone with a high school degree wrote the script). It's apples and oranges.

Yeah but it's a little ironic that "this generation's Star Wars" is actually "this generation's Star Trek".

this pretty much explains it. I saw it in an IMAX theater and was blown away by effects both visual and audio. The plot was great too.

Next up: UP! in 3d in IMAX.
