When did telling people to watch their possessions in areas where there's lots of pick pocketing's translate into an ineffective police force? The argument seems to be grasping at straws.

Out of curiosity how many times have you been to Holland?

are you stupid? In Houston we don't have signs warning people about pickpockets because when we catch one we either shoot them or put them in jail. It is a much better deterrent than hanging a sign.

Pick pocketing happens everywhere, admitting where it happens more than not is being honest about the problem, especially with the amount of tourists that flow through there.

Anyways, how many times have you been to Holland?

Kthx is right in that police forces in a lot of European states (at least all the ones I've been to) aren't as ruthless in enforcing laws. There is a downside to having such an effective police force but at least we don't have immigrants selling shit on every street and we can put our money in back pockets.

Sorry, I'd rather carry plastic around Holland any day than walk through the shady parts of Detroit (all of them are shady, but I digress), Dallas, LA, New York, or even Boston with a wad of cash in my back pocket.

But that's why I never carry more than 20 bucks on me at a time.

Kthx, seriously... start learning something about the world and maybe you'll come off less like a retard.

And, I have been all over Europe, I have always had my wallet in my backpocket and I have never been pick pocketed. The only reason they put the signs up is to make you aware of the possibility, it is not that big of a problem and I doubt it happens more here than in the US. In fact, cities like New York are far more opportune cities for pick pockets, the streets are absolutely crowded at places like Time Square in the evening, you are always bumping into someone.

Wow, totally agreed on the ruthless part. I've been in touch with US law enforcers a couple of times and they seemed more like civil "masters" than civil servants to me. And I'm not even talking about the horror they call US immigration or TSA, where everyone is guilty until proven innocent. I always like to say that in the Netherlands you are the one that needs to find the police, whereas in the US the police will find you.

And before kthx jumps in with his twisted logic I'd like to say that despite the abundance of a seemingly effective American police force vs. the seemingly absent one over here, the crime rates in general are still lower over here.

DTF: That's a terribly unfair comparison. Sure there are places in Detroit, New York, Atlanta, etc. that you shouldn't go unless you belong there but the same can be said of Paris, Madrid, Brussels, London, and any other major city. We're talking about pickpocketing in public areas, not walking through the worst slums in every country for no reason.

Nycle, I don't know where you are getting this guilty until proven innocent bullshit but it's just not true. Rights of the accused are respected more in America than probably any where else. There is an unbelievable amount of corruption in many European countries' police forces, most of which goes unreported. While there is corruption at some levels in America it's not like you can bribe a cop here like you can most other countries in the world.

I meant ruthless in a good way when speaking about American police forces. They find the crime and stamp it out - that way I don't have to worry about being pickpocketed, mugged, or solicited all the time in most areas (again, nobody is talking about walking through the fucking ghetto). Illegal searches result in acquittals in America so it's not like the cops can just do whatever the fuck they want whenever they want.

As for crime rates, I don't want this to devolve into a "US has high murder rates, guns=bad" thread but probably the reason there is a lot of crime is because the US does a good job at finding the people who break the law. You don't have to worry about smoking pot in Europe as much because you'll likely get away with it. Not so in the US. Pickpocketing and bribery often go unreported in Europe, not so in the US. An effective police force will always mean more "crime" simply because they're better at finding criminals.

Of course you don't know where I'm getting my bullshit from because you don't have to pass through immigration every year. I never doubted the integrity of the rule of law in the US, why do you think I do? You're portraying the whole guilty until proven innocent thing in a courtroom situation with a judge and all that, whereas I was clearly doing it in an airport situation. Immigration officers and TSA staff are just plain rude and downward disrespectful to you, even when you're trying to cooperate in a polite manner. This isn't incidental, I know what I'm talking about because I have to face them every year and it's always the same. Sometimes you really do get the feeling that you're being treated like a criminal who's guilty until proven innocent (i.e., when you cleared security and immigration).

And you're pretty ignorant when it comes to your "explanation" on the high crime rate in the US. What proof do you have that the American police is more effective in tracking down and fighting crime than in the Netherlands? What is your source? You just put that argument forward based on your own made up assumption that a more "aggressive" way of handling things somehow results in a more effective police force and a higher (reported) crime rate. It sounds like something Wark would make up.

I don't want to devolve this thread into a "more guns and homicide rates = bad" any more than you do. The US doesn't even have a lot of crime compared to a lot of other countries, I never even said that. I only wanted to point out an interesting difference.
