Humans, just like every other species of Earth, has reached the threshold of The Great Insurmountable Obstacle To Evolutionary Progression. On a side note, and ironically, that phrase "insurmountable obstacle" I learned from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World when I read it in high school and has been my most favorite quote from a book to recite. It's from the section where the head scientist Dr. Mond is giving the tour to the interns of the human test tube factory; "Consider your own lives," said Mustapha Mond. "Has any of you ever encountered an insurmountable obstacle?"
The life giving elixir has certainly been on the obstacle list since before the invention of heaven, and there are microbiologists working out cellular formulas in current times. But lets say we figure out how to take the human body to the repair shop for replacement parts, ensuring that we live on for 300, 500, or 1000 years. When you consider the devastation that we have caused on nature up to this point, there will not be the necessary support systems in existence left that can provide us with such life, no matter how manufactured.
And the part that religion plays is that it has led humanity into supporting it's doctrine of governing therefore providing society with predictable and convenient shortcuts to independent thinking and without the evolution of consciousness, actions taken conscientiously don't exist and therefore we have destroyed our planet and any hope for continued existence.

You know even though Huxley's Brave New World exists and is a very good book - that doesnt mean we still cant have utopia engineering that is good instead of bad. there are good drugs that exist that the whole population should be on, which are not like Soma. When books are written by about the future, they all have to be bad, because otherwise you wouldnt have a protagonist and a conflict in the book, duh.
