  • 140 Year Old Hot Dog found in Coney Island...with the receipt!

With Coney Island being rebuilt and the renovations and demolishion taking place, a treasure of Coney Island past is found. A 140 year old hot dog still in the roll with the receipt from Feldmans.

I think they should do a check on the hot dog and compare it to todays dogs and see how much filler is in todays dogs. They can possibly re-create the old styled dog and bring back.

BTW...Charles Feldman invented the hot dog, so it is somewhat historical.

I was about to post this, its pretty cool. Sure some ass is gonna pop in here and say who gives a fuck about a hot dog but whatever. The fact that its been preserved in ice so long is freakin awesome. They've got it on exhibit for free admission in CI, probably gonna walk there and check it out when it warms up.

    Its fking snowing outside... AGAIN.

Snowing here to mate. Calling it a Snowwicane, as we are to get a possibility of 40 - 55MPH winds with this crap later in the day.

The Coney Island thing was interesting...been on top of this as we are working with the planners and architects for re-zoning of Coney Island and the surrounding areas of Brooklyn. When this is finished, Coney Island is going to be a happening place again. 1st time probably since 1945.

So anytime something of any news on Coney Island comes about, I get emails and links. This time it was at least an interest story they sent me and not my typical architectural/engineering emails I get from them.

hold on here buddy, coney island is crowded all the time. i go there every summer / spring basically when it's 70+ degrees out. Sure you may be saying a "happening place" meaning they dont make much business but that's a problem in itself. it's so crowded it's hard to move around. people don't really go in to stores or anything because we're LOCALS, we dont need to buy souvenirs or anything..

if business has been lost it's because the neighborhood has been scaring away tourists (they're the ones that buy everything). I'm sure you've been to coney island before, how long ago was your last visit, and have you walked at least one block away from the boardwalk? have you seen the neighborhood?

Hmm maybe this'll give you some insight on what kinds of problems CI really faces and why

My favorite place in CI is Beer Island though, man that place is fucking cool. It's an artificial beach that's next to a beach! .. and it has a walk-up bar and a munchie food place for philly cheese steaks, burgers, franks, etc. $$

When all is said and done when this area is re-built, look for most of the surrounding area of crack housing to be gone. I was at Coney Island last summer when I was in town for sales calls to a few Architects and Builders.

You may be happy with what is there now...as far as the park area, but it is all gonna change. I personally think that the boardwalk and beach area are disgusting and could use a clean up and new look. My father grew up a block away from Coney Island, so when I compare what is there today and what was, through my pop's stories and pics...dude Coney Island is a friggin dump at the moment.

New construction in partnership with the YMCA of Greater New York, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and New York City Economic Development Corporation, construction will soon begin on a new state-of-the-art 40,000 SF community center in Coney Island.

This facility was developed with significant input from the Coney Island residents it will serve. It will provide the neighborhood with much-needed amenities, including a swimming pool, a gymnasium and flexible, multi-purpose spaces for programmed activities. The $56 million project will also include around 150 units of affordable housing.

This is just a small portion of this project that will take place, because in addition, the planned rezoning would expand the length of contiguous parkland along the boardwalk, permanently protecting land stretching from Asser Levy to Keyspan Park for amusement and recreation.

Xog...look into the zoning and planning for this area...shit you live there! It is gonna be sweet when this is finished!

I looked into the zoning plans a couple of years ago - I had saw that they were trying to get rid of the Brooklyn Cyclone Stadium and damn near punched a wall. Not all of us over here agree with what they're planning.

The one thing that they really need to get rid of is the giant school bus parking lot. Have you seen that thing? Complete waste of space!

              Wait a damn second.

                just read an article

                SNIP
Though it’s difficult to imagine the boardwalk without Ruby’s – a scruffy institution for decades – it’s just as hard to see how it can fit in with the current slick and soulless vision for a Vegas-style Coney Island.

Xog, I will keep ya posted on the news and changes that are coming for Coney Island. You should see the Hotels that are to be built, one will make the Bellagio hotel look like a motor inn!

All comes down to Joe Sitt as he owns 99% of all the land and has been brokering deals with Bloomberg. Sitt was quoted and noted:

He plans to build a glittering resort paradise right next to the Coney Island boardwalk—a retail and entertainment colossus every bit as outrageous and flamboyant as the Bahamas’ Atlantis. The plan includes megaplexes. An indoor water park. A 500-room, four-star hotel—four stars, in Coney Island!—and, at the center of it all, an enormous, psychedelic carousel laced with visual cues to a Coney Island that Timothy Leary could have dreamed up. Equally spectacular, Sitt hopes, will be a blimp that will take off from the complex’s roof, carrying tourists on joyrides over the city as it flashes the resort’s name in giant technicolor letters: THE BOARDWALK AT CONEY ISLAND. “The dirigible will leave every ten minutes,” Sitt says, jabbing his finger excitedly toward the sky. “On an ongoing basis. Another. Another. Another. Lifting off and taking people on a tour, spreading the message that this is the place to be.”

Honestly that will never happen. I'm sorry, but for the past 7 years I've been hearing shit about how coney island blah blah destroyed blah blah rebuild blah better blah and every year its a different idea.

that blimp crap is going to fail miserably. the "four-star hotels" will be rat and cockroach infested within minutes. The money will be a complete waste. Believe me I love the idea but it just hurts to hear so many different ideas that are taking shape and nothing ever happens. they took away the fking batting cages and go-karts a while back and I was fking pissed.

                    Guess what's there?
                    NOTHING!

Disney was to build in Philly as well using a project name called "Quest", of which was to be an interactive theme park. Purchased the land and never built anything. Have done work with Disney too many time and for too many years to know that 90% of what they do outside of the current theme parks is usually crap and a tax write off for WED Enterprises or Disney's Imagineering.

All I know is that we have plans and specs from the architects and engineers on this Coney Island project. Much of it may not happen such as the blimp rides, but the Hotels and Park area will happen. The money is there and the push from Bloomberg will get this rolling this spring/summer.

As I said...I will keep you posted on if anything changes and or new happens with Coney Island. I am seeing $$$$$$$$$$ for my biz, so of course I am excited about this.

The blimp sounds like the most terrible idea I ever heard. A bunch of blimps hoovering over NY with large Neon Letters flashing and stuff? Hello scary future...
Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

When you think of NY I'm sure you think of big tall sky scrapers.. but coney island is in brooklyn (one of the boroughs in NY), not manhattan (the borough with all of the buildings)

here's a great view of brooklyn from the Empire State Building in manhattan
