I can agree with that. I just don't view it as racism, but rather stereotyping. Racism is more along the lines of hatred of a specific race/culture. Stereotyping is just saying "those azns over thurr has chinky eyes and eats too much rice!DFSLJ!!"

That's stereotyping of the racist type. There's also stereotyping that all women are irrational and bad drivers (sexism) or that all nerds are pimply or that all plumbers are fat or that all jocks are dumb or that all blondes are clueless. No races involved means no racism.

I think there are some underlying factors that are motivating people's emotional responses to this seemingly harmless video.
1. She gives the impression of a quintessential "stupid american girl"
2. She criticizes the Asian family structure and social elements that may seem unusual to Westerners and for which, I'm sure, Asians are sensitive about.
3. She says "ching chong".

All of which without being directly racist.

The responses are just as ignorant and subversively racist, but apparently that's ok because white people can take it, because, you know, we are better than everyone else.

I wouldn't be surprised if this girl is studying psychology and this video is some kind of an attempt at displaying the influence of racial tensions upon people's ability to interpret speech/communication.

I think your response deserves a response (of the non-trolling kind), because it is not uncommon and the response itself is actually more interesting than the rant itself. While I believe in having some fun at the girl's expense, short of death threats and all that, there is a lot to be said when people respond with "that isn't racist because..."

Firstly, most girls give off the impression of "stupid American girl" but her situation is unique in that she connected "American" with her set of cultural values from middle-America, which in itself are not uniquely American. Secondly, as an Asian American, I'm capable at laughing at my own stereotypes, and I'm ok with my friends laughing at it too. But a random white person going around saying "ching chong ling long" to mock Asian dialet in general, and having that not be "directly" racist, is a little hard to swallow. If you're a white person and don't have that sensibility, then it would be difficult for you to fully understand it because you've never been a part of the racial minority. The sensitivity here isn't about how we are sensitive or ashamed of our culture, it is all about her insensitivity and the way she decided to use the internet as a medium, rather than simply telling a friend about it. If I was her friend, and she did that entire rant to me and me only, I would agree with you - it would not be directly racist because I have an understanding that she is not racist as a person.

As for the responses also being "subversively racist," - if she is not being "directly" racist, has any of the responses been directly racist? Why would UCLA's top dog come out with a public apology if nothing wrong has happened here? The reality is that not everyone in America understands that it is impossible for the white majority to "take" racism, when racism is defined on their terms. For example:

I think it's the imitation (really the mockery of it) and the general ignorance when white people say "Ching chong." Simply put, there is no acceptable way for non-Asians to mock Asian dialect, except maybe if it was a person to person interaction, where we are friends. Think of it this way - if Michael Richards was black when he went on his "racist" tirade, would people still be offended?

Living in a country where you are a minority, and being a minority because you live in a country, are different things. For example, you can be a white "American" and live in China - yes, there will be racism towards you, however you are not considered Chinese. The difference is that anyone can be American. I can be a Chinese person living in America, and I can be "American." The reverse isn't true. Racial segregation will never stop being an issue in America, because by definition "American" isn't a single race. Racial segregation anywhere else isn't particularly an issue - because an Asian person would never consider a Caucasian as being "Asian." I have caucasian missionary friends who have lived in China for decades. Even though they have been there for 20+ years, people still treat them like foreigners. While I've been in America for 20+ years, people treat me like an American - and that's the beauty of being in America.

For the most part the Asian community have laughed at it. And I agree we should laugh or ignore this. Some people took it a bit far, I don't condone any sort of violence or threat of violence in this matter. We never needed to solidify racist undertones because again, racism isn't defined by the minority. For another example, Asians are considered the "model" minority in America - do you know why? It is because during the civil rights period in American history, no Asians took arms against the white majority. In maintaining compliance, our passivity became an enabler for the white majority to stereotype us as "smart" and "good at math" and "passive" and "models." Whereas stereotypes for blacks became much more negative.

The victims here are not Asian children or anything like that - this will not serve as a pinnacle example to racial tension in America. It's just a reminder that racial undertones do exist and they always will. The way to deal with it isn't to blurt out your opinions all over the internet, but to start building personal relationships. My children, God willing, will be mixed (my fiancee is white) and I do plan on teaching them Asian culture. If we are standing up for our American ideals, for them to know that there is racism and segregation, and for them to acknowledge the uniqueness of their own situation, can only make them more "American."

In any case I predicted this would blow over by the end of the week, and it pretty much has.
