i think an important factor when you look at this would have to be the time of death for each of these people, which would probably have been pretty hard to determine back then (and maybe even now)

because you have like, a line leading from the camp into the woods and ending at a ravine. leaving from the camp and heading to the woods you see bodies appearing as if they were trying to return to the camp, and then at the edge of the woods you have bodies next to a fire (with clothes missing), and then at the ravine you have the bodies that were pretty fucked up. time of death pretty key here
