Either way it's not going to stop pirating. They barely even know how the internet works let alone the various ways people can get around it.

No, but large companies could use it as a way to shut down neighbouring competing websites because they are in their market, and money is involved.

Actually, I see could see that happening. It doesn't have to be large scale, but the implications are there that enable corporations to do just that, shoot-first-ask-later, because there seems to be very little to no penalty to them if they incorrectly used that power. Thus begins the downward spiral.

The main reason why I could see it happening is because there is human involvement and most humans are pretty dumb in the face.

Apparently shutting down Megaupload, even though they have a clear stance against pirated material being uploaded on their website, is going to end piracy once and for all. Long live our elected idiots.

Mega was a serious operation because theres people who used it to backup files and who redirect to it to distribute freeware and other non-piracy reasons to redirect to it from their sites.

In order to shut down mega you would have to interfere with all these non-piracy people, therefore its a very serious operation that had other hidden motives, to have the balls to interfere with the non-piracy files as well, at the same time.

If you go to DSK Music Website, youll see a donation and ad based site that has free VST's they created as freeware, and it re-directs to an uploading site similar to mega to get the freeware plugins - go there to get free plugins for your music making program

          http://dskmusic.blogspot.com/p/downloads.html

I just gave a link that not only serves as an example of non-piracy use of uploader sites, but also an example thats useful for any electronic music makers, enjoy

LMMS is a freeware studio that will hopefully develop even more in the future

There's not a rule that says I can't let other people listen to or watch the things I buy. Why should that be any different if I want to upload things to sharing websites?

Didn't realize 'listen to' meant 'own a copy of'...the rules on this are pretty clear and have been established long ago during the napster era. I already owned kthx with this and he just resorted to the 'you are ridiculous im done talking now' fallback.

I'm ridiculous cause I have a firm grasp on the basic principles of copyright laws? And support legislation that is being put in place to help enforce them?

no, youre rediculous because like cthx, who resorts to ad hominems & sticking his fingers in his ears when proven wrong, you say dumb things like "im going to ignore anyone who opposes my ideas" and stick your fingers in your ears

I know Maddox is old, but he wrote a fascinating opinion of SOPA: http://maddox.xmission.com/

I've been following these seemingly disastrous bills for the last month or so, and it's actually very true. We need a kick in the ass. Signing a petition or changing your facebook profile picture doesn't really count as activism.
