China is the current #1 superpower in the world, and guess what? They are primarily socialist/communist. I mean they have added more capitalistic aspects to their economy over time, but they remain primarily in their original state. Canada, has socialized health care and the #1 bad boy of all socialism: a solitary national bank. Canada has not had a recession since 1904, and their income disparity is pretty fucking amazing for a country with such geographical size and population. But let's move even closer to home, and look at America. The social programs which are widely regarded as the most successful and which changed our nation's type to a Welfare State are a little thing called The New Deal; and they are almost entirely socialist in nature. This isn't even examining the EU, especially the smaller nations which essentially prove that socialism can at least work on a state level.

Should we switch to socialism in this country entirely? Fuck no. But things like having no recessions in 110 years and not having the largest income disparity since the great depression are things that are looking kinda good right now. Maybe we should start looking at what the rest of the world is doing and give them some credit rather than always thinking our dick is biggest.

Canada was affected by the worldwide recession, probably not as hard as other countries - but we were still affected. I believe without looking this up that Canada is doing the best compared to all other G8 countries. The housing market is on a twenty year high, which isn't healthy. The life cycle of the housing market should be about about eight years. What my generation is facing (the 20-30 years olds) are lacking permanent stable jobs. I'm currently looking for a home in central Ontario (The General Toronto area, known at the GTA). The GTA is the largest population centre in Canada. The average price of a bachelor apartment is around $225,000 - 300,000 (500-700 sq ft). These apartments aren't even in the city, they're in the burbs. Minimum wage is frozen at $10.25 in Ontario. Even for those who like myself are earning over $20 an hour, it is still extremely hard to come up with a down payment for a shoebox apartment that will cost you a quarter of a million dollars. Until we see home prices become proportional to income, my generation will be that of renters and basement ballers.

The condo market is plagued with foreign investors trying to make a quick buck. "Nearly a quarter of Vancouver's apartments are vacant, but generation Y still can't afford to buy in" (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/daily...190627667.html). Canada is a geographically large country with a relatively small controllable population.

Probably no one gives a shit, but if anyone is curious this is probably one of the best documentaries I've seen. It's called Generation Jobless, it's only about 45 minutes long. The first minute of the doc includes the following statements. "Joblessness has hit young Canadians like a freight train. Maybe we're the lost generation. We haven't seen anything like this in almost 100 years. It is a sorry puzzle in three parts, business, education, and government. Canada is the only country in the world without a ministry of education, and it shows. We need to stop funnelling people through this program that leaves them with unemployment and debt on the other side".

Overall you have a good point though about learning from other countries. Hopefully Canada learns a couple lessons from its peers, specifically regarding the need for a Ministry of Education and the need to limit the amount of foreign investors in our real estate market.

Read Frederic Bastiat's "The Law" It talks about "Legal plunder" and how that's exactly what the ACA is. The book was written in 1850. The stuff spoken of in the book mirrors current problems. It's quite short, and you can probably find it online. I have it in PDF format. If you really want to discuss what government should and should not be allowed to do, that book is an excellent reference.

Every nation in the world is Authoritarian Collectivist. Sometimes if a country has a combo of a first-world high GDP & low population & a person has no special needs that the state is interfering with, a person is relatively happy, such as people in Denmark, Norway, Switzerland. However all states are Authoritarian Collectivist dictatorships who's primary job is to calls harm & reduce standard of living.

The state is not smart enough to be the state. The people that make up the governments literally are below the minimal threshold of intelligence to run a government. This will cause them to legislate laws based on ignorance & lack of experience & understanding which go on to cause harm. Humans are fair at engineering & the sciences, but literally do not have the capacity to be able to govern, nor enforce law.

However, its a too-big-to-fail, so instant psychological denial would ensue if I told you that all judges, jurors, lawyers, legislators, governors, presidents, cabinets and bureaucrats do not have the ability to hold those positions and are not qualified to do so. It is literally impossible to assemble qualified people to hold the positions & its like children playing house. It would either require absolute monarchies where the ruler is normal with the quality to govern & correct everything possible to correct -or- absolute constitutional republic functioning without a smart monarch looking over, where the people are left to live & left live with no laws interfering with their sovereignty.

Because this is a whole of society & not a part, instant psychological denial will take place. Wholes cannot be exposed, only parts, like if i spoke of one specific country instead of the whole world & governments themselves; or one specific mental illness instead of the entire population. A whole is too big to fail so exposing it causes psychological denial where the person will pretend the failures & impossibilities do not exist because the truth hurts too much.
