  • Microsoft users beware

In case you guys didn't know, there is a major security flaw in the RPC Interface of many MS Windows versions. Just this week, a new virus is out there that capitalizes on this flaw. Make sure you download the patch from Microsoft and update your virus patterns.

    MS Fix :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...n/MS03-026.asp (patch locations near the bottom of the page)

    Info on W32.Blaster.Worm :
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ster.worm.html

This one could be a biggie.

Edit : I forgot to mention that this one does not spread like normal viruses. The vulnerability allows the file (and any other) to be run remotely. Just being on the internet puts you at risk.

    llater,
    Tony

This is a huge worm. It has just started.. So get rid of it as fast as you can.
    You have the worm if
-A window pops up and counts down from 60 before your computer shuts down.

Go to the site brookus said to go to.
Then before you download the patch..
    Go to your "Control Panel"
    Then "Administration Tools"
    Then "Services"
Then Scroll down.. Double Click on Remote Procedure call (the 1st Remote Procedure)
    Click on the tab "Recovery"
And for all 3 "Failures" Put "Take No Action"
    Good luck

I have the same problem, svchost.exe got shut down for no appearent reasons, although no other processes get interrupted because of it.

EXCELLENT! Glad this isnt just me. I even reformatted and I still had the problem, so don't try it ...I've just downloaded this new patch, so I'm hoping it works. Let's all switch to linux and Windows ME!

Edit: Thanks brookus. My computer seems to be fine now.

i got the "shutting down in 60 seconds" box and fucking flipped out like a god damn orangotang. then i went to google and looked up the problem and found out that i could fix it just by not ignoring the windows update thing that pops up on my screen every few days. i think i should be fine now.

You're 32-bit, unless you know that you have a 64-bit processor (you'd know if you did).

                        I had it too :/

                        http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r/FixBlast.exe

Download this and let it scan ur drives and it removes it automatiacly.

After scan it hops you into that link which was shown above on brooks post, microsoft's patch page, then install patch, this worked on my case, btw on windows XP you need to turn your System Restore off before using blasterscanner.

                        More about fixblast.exe in here : http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

How to turn xp's system restore off :

To enable/disable System Restore, go to the Control Panel ('Start > Control Panel') and double click the 'System' icon. Then:

Click on the 'System Restore' tab on the system applet.
Check mark 'turn off system restore on all drives' to turn off system restore on the system.
Uncheck the box to enable System Restore monitoring on the system.
                        Click OK when done.

Its frustrating to write these lines after every post^
I'd hope there would be another way..like some automatic system that fills them itself after every post.
