The ultimate proof that minorities today are not seeking color blind, equal, treatment by government, but instead direct preferences and handouts.

For those of you that dont know the debate, prop 54 proposes that no government institution shall be able to ask the race of an individual during school admissions, the granting of government contracts, etc...

Several minority groups are up in arms. How are significant numbers of their underqualified representatives supposed to be able to make it into college without special treatment? The whole concept of racially based affirmative action makes me want to puke. As if there arent white kids in compton and black kids in Beverly Hills.

Double edged sword man. Being white there's a little part of me that says affirmative action sucks. But being informed there's another little part of me that supports it, and thinks it's absolutely necessary. I've always thought it should be economic background and not racial. If it happens that more poor black kids are trying harder than more poor white kids than I got no grief.

I agree Mayo, and I would have no problem with a system that gave preferences for economically disadvanataged children. Unfortunately affirmative action works blindly along strictly racial grounds, and its fucked. One of the core functions of our constitution is to hold the basic rights of an individual to equal treatment by the government above the advancement of any particular group or interest. Sure it's nice to get more minority representation in the elite sector of society, but the end does not justify the means. You still have to realize that when one person is getting bonus points on admission, someone else is getting fucked because of their non-minority status. This is wrong, no matter how pleasant the results.
