  • GeN's top 3 CDs of the Summer

i'm quite a diverse music lover so i just thought i'd share my top 3 albums of the summer.

    in no particular order
    1) radiohead-hail to the thief: this album to me is a return from the kid a/amnesiac experimental sessions that radiohead had. while still retaining influences of the experimental radiohead, they divert back to heavier guitars much like on the bends and especially ok computer (examples are 2+2=5 and go to sleep). this album is a good culmination of guitar driven british rock, experimental techno-ish style music, and anything yorke's crazy mind comes up with. too hard for me to say it's better or worse than any other radiohead album as i like them all but it sure is different than all the others at least in some ways. highlights include (other than the whole cd) go to sleep, we suck young blood, and myxamitosis. i give it a 9.5/10

    2) 311-evolver: been a 311 fan since i was in 5th or 6th grade (i'm in 12th now) and their latest effort is pretty damn good. after from chaos came out 2 summers ago by infatuation with the diverse hip-hop/reggae/rock sound that 311 produced diminished because i didn't think from chaos matched up to classics like my personal favourites grassroots and transistor. however, evolver is a step in the right direction in my opinion. though it isn't as experimental reggae-ish as transistor was (which is what i like) it is still some damn good music. and since i've become less and less interested in much hip-hop type music i was surprised to like this album so much. highlights include jacks will rule the realm, number 4, and number 8 (i think). i give it a 7.5/10

    3) the mars volta- deloused in the commatorium: i probably spelled the album title wrong but i don't feel like getting up and finding the disc. anyways, this is a great follow-up to their tremulant EP that came out about a year ago. in case any of you haven't heard of them, they are one of the 2 bands that formed from the breakup of at the drive-in. sparta is the other band (which contains the lead guitarist, the bassist who plays guitar now, and the drummer from at the drive-in). the mars volta contains cedric bixler and omar rodriguez (the lead singer with the insane voice and the backup guitarist/main songwriter respectively. this album far surpasses their tremulant EP as well as the LP that sparta produced (wiretap scars). highlights include roulette dares and cicatriz esp. i give this a 10/10

i also wanna give an honorable mention to brand new's deja entendue (spelling).

what are your top 3 of the summer?
