My old band was playing at a bar here in Iowa City for a competition for a spot to open up for Everclear (this was a few years back). The competition broke down into two main contenders at the end--my band and some band from Cedar Rapids, IA.
Now, this bar is pretty big (biggest bar in the Big 10 schools--take THAT, shitty Big Ten schools), and both of the bands had a LOT of fans in the crowd. Anyways, both bands got called onstage at the end for the final vote tally (there were 9 judges, as I remember). So I'm standing onstage, looking out on this veritable sea of people, when the MC walks up to the mic:
"And the winner is... Fool's Journey!" (Fool's Journey being the name of my old band.)
IMMEDIATELY, the crowd erupts into a big barroom brawl. And I'm not talking like there were just a couple of punches thrown--we're talking people picking other people up over their heads and throwing them into tables. Full-on wrestling moves--crazy shit. I've never seen anything like it.
As we're trying to pack our equipment up, we were all like "shit, let's go out the back way and hope we don't get jacked." As we left, we saw about 40 people lined up outside the bar, all getting arrested. It was crazy stuff.
