Anyone heard or seen the movie(anime) Laputa: Castle in the Sky? I think it's the best anime I've ever seen.

It must be the best movie with that avatar.

It was okay, but I saw it in Japanese without subs, so I don't know how much I actually understood.

This movie came out the year I was born, 1985, I recall viewing it, but don't recall the story, until lately. WHAT DO YOU KNOW! An English version came out in North America earlier this year, around April. Apparantly, Disney bought all of Gihbli films, and are being distrubuted one by one. Laputa is out in stores now, so I bought it and it was amazing. Very vague memories told me that this wasn't my first time watching it, though.

Absolutely amazing movie. It for sure inspired the concept of the airship and floating fortresses which so many other anime/games have taken (i.e. final fantasy). Best ever anime? I'm not sure about that, but definately up there in the top 10.

I'll have to see if this is on the local DC hub. It looks promising.

Ok, so I found it. It's in two parts, both in avi format and both weighing in at about 675 megs. If anyone has a decent connection (cable, dsl or better) and would like to download it from me, let me know and I'll set you up with ftp access.

Laputa is nice, but not the best - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind or Mononoke Hime from the same author, for instance, are more filled with content

1:Eeks> well that bichix was trying to start conversation with me today

I heard a rumour that Master Miyazaki will come out of his retirement and make one more movie, and the story is also about a levitating "land". Hope it's true!

Oh, and Totoro is great too, not to mention Kiki Delivery Service. Anything from Studio Ghibli is gauranteed to amaze you. In addition, GRAVE OF THE FIREFLY is sure one of the saddest film I've ever seen, says a lot about Japan during the war(WWII) and how they were living. I think this movie is so sad because you know what is gonna happen in the ending from the start(WWII, Japan, *hint hint*). This is also the movie that got me loving hard fruit candies(Sort of like Jolly Rancher, but their packaging are a oboe-shaped can). Also intrigued by the flying/floating creations Miyazaki makes in all his films.

Story Summary I found on the internet:

Towards the end of WWII, 14y/o Seita and his 4y/o sister Setsuko lost their mother in an air attack. Nowhere to go, the children took up residence in a cave, and lived on fishing and stealing vegetables. Lack of food, little Setsuko gradually grew weak...

Oh and you know what I want to see? A prequel to Laputa, the beginning and all. Really want to know how "advance" they are, like are their society as advance as their technology? Or what kind of clothes did they wore? And how did this all end? Things like that. The vintage scenes at the beginning says a lil.

Grave of the Fireflies is based on a very famous novel in Japan which is more or less required reading in a lot of schools I believe.

Mononoke blew me away when I first saw it. And Spirited Away isn't half bad either.

After looking at that website, I've noticed that Miyazaki IS making a next film after his retiring, it's called Howl's Moving Castle. I'm more interested in the next floating castle than the storyline though. It's coming out in Japan next August, hopefully there'll be an English or Chinese version out quickly following.

                              Site is: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/howl/
