Worms 3D is a step in the wrong direction. Worms World Party was the last Worms game Team17 ever made worthy of the acclaim past Worms games have earned.
If you think about it, Worms and SubSpace are very similar, with respect to their tried and true 2D environment. Trying to add that extra dimension just fucks up the long-lived, much-loved gameplay.
had team17 stuck with 2d platform style combat, the genre would grow stagnant as there really isn't much more to add to gameplay other than weapons, and more enviroments (off the top of my head)
3d keeps it 'wormy' but adds a refreshing new perspective (judging from the hour or so ive spent playing)

I agree that the genre has grown stagnant. I don't think Team17 could possibly come out with another 2D Worms game and manage to make it any more interesting than the previous ones. I also happen to think that the 2D Worms games fall under the category of timeless classic, though.
I dunno, the way they did the poly/voxel thing was pretty fucking cool. They clean that sucker up, add all the weapons we know and love, and I'll play that crap till the cows (err, sheep) come home.
Hogs of War did it first, and it wasn't half bad, although the weapon selection wasn't half as interesting and overall the game was below Worms' standards.
