first off, i'm just posting in this forum because i live in it. if someone feels it's more appropriate in another, feel free to move it.
No matter what your backgrounds or beliefs, I just want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. This is going to be the first year my family isn't having a big get-together, and that's okay with me, considering what happened. For those of you who live in northeastern New Jersey, or have somehow heard of it elsewhere, my uncle Officer John Charles Samra was killed Friday on his motorcycle while chasing a man who took off while he was being ticketed.
My grandfather's sobs are etched in my mind, more so because of the time of the incident. John's brother's surprise birthday party was going to be two days later.
I was just at the funeral all day today, and it couldn't have been more honorable. Thousands of people showed up, including police squads from as far as Pennsylvania. They closed down most of the city's streets for the mile-long procession. Air Force jets flew over the cemetery, and he received a 21-gun salute. Bagpipes even played Amazing Grace before we left the cemetery.
i couldn't be more proud of my uncle, and this will be the best thanksgiving ever. to anyone who reads this, be thankful for everything you have, but more importantly, everyone. feel free to post any memories you have; it's already made my coping with this a lot better.
