Doesn't this describe the majority of popular hit albums?

Hey man, I wasn't the one who remembered the next line after "Blinded by the light".

I'm not talking music *I've* never heard of. The reason mainstream albums and groups are mainstream is because they're the ones that get bought / are listened to the most. This means they have the highest probability of being on any average person's "Top 10 Albums" list. So you see, to name 10 that aren't anywhere near mainstream gives you that angsty feel.
And note that I never said it was "bad music", I was merely stating that that's how it is. So, to single out Outkast's album is pointless.

The point is A) you aren't even telling me what music you like, so I can tell you it sucks dick, and B) your point is stupid. You aren't justifying why music that's not mainstream would be considered angsty. Linkin Park sells about 7 billion records every day. Have you ever heard their music? Example parody lyrics: "You never listen to me! Why can't you hear my words? You are my everything! Why can't I live without you? I want to hold your heart in my hands! You never listen to me! Ignoring me! Not gonna listen to you!!!! Who's gonna listen now??? Listen to me! Listen to me! Listen to me! Listen to me! Shut up! (really shitty rap breakdown)"

Lol! True, true. But that's not what I meant, and I'll explain shortly.
As for me, some of my favorite groups / singers include Aerosmith, Metallica, Yes, Queen, Styx, Sting, David Bowie, Chicago, Goo Goo Dolls, Weezer, Guns n Roses, etc. More recently, I like 3 Doors Down, Evanescence, Foo Fighters, Creed, Queens of the Stoneage. So, I don't have too many favorite albums of 2003, nor have I bought many this year. But if I were to research a bit and buy my 10 favorite of the year, probability dictates that at least a couple of them would be at least somewhat "mainstream".
As for the Linkin Park thing, note again that you're transforming what I say into what you think I'm saying. I did not state, though, that your music was angsty, I said you appear angsty for listing 10 albums that wouldn't be considered anywhere near mainstream. It seems to come from the whole non-conformist, "Popular music must be crap because the majority of people like it" thing. It has nothing to do with the music, itself (lyrics).
Now, I don't particularly care if you tell me my music sucks dick. Realize, though, that I never once stated or implied that your music sucks. I might like some of it, myself. That's not the point here, however, as stated above. One more time, it simply has to do with the probability expecation that if you list a 10 favorite anything (movies, tv shows, music, etc), at least a couple of them could be considered at least somewhat mainstream. But feel free to knock yourself out, if bashing my music makes you feel better, brah. :P

The problem is your research would consist of going to amazon.com and browsing through the most bought albums of 2003 and coming to your conclusions based on that.
It seems to come from the whole non-conformist, "Popular music must be crap because the majority of people like it" thing. It has nothing to do with the music, itself (lyrics).
It seems to come from me not wanting people to tell me what is good and what is not. I will listen to what I want and determine if it is good based on my standards, not the radio stations or the record companies.
It has nothing to do with the music, itself (lyrics).
It has everything to do with the lyrics and the music. If I can relate to the lyrics and the music is at least decent, I will usually like it. I can't relate to Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson singing about their love for guys. I can't relate to 50 Cent singing about pimping his hobags or celebrating his friend's birthday. I can't relate to Norah Jones singing about...actually I can relate to Norah Jones but she just fucking sucks. You see, I like music that I can connect with and I enjoy hearing something different from what is on the radio (of which I grew up listening to). Case in point, I will decide what I think is good at my discretion and not that of a thousand other people.

I dont like the whole mainstream debate. It gets messy.
Most mainstream is mainstream because marketers shove it down our throats and tell us it is good. Some is mainstream because its such amazing music, it breaks through the crust of pop-culture and shines. Take Early Weezer, for example. Pinkerton wasnt that mainstream, but close enough. Blue was amazing, real "fun" album. Green album was the product of too much mainstream. It blew. Rovers Cuomo even said he didnt actually write any of the songs on Green album about a girl--he just made them up.
I think the Internet will kill pop though, because everyone from everywhere can connect and share music. My town is fairly isolated (louisiana, hicksville) and the radio plays britneypop. But my playlist is pretty much every band jason has mentioned, and ZeUs. Through the internet, good bands will stay good and bad bands will have their one hit wonder and fade away.
Cylor, i feel the same way. Alot of my music is "critical", being as i am a debater. Anti-Flag critiques statism, Thursday's newest album is subtely political, Cursive critiques alot of pop culture (Cut it out/your self inflicted pain/is getting too routine/the crowds are catching on/to your self inflicted songs) and whatnot. I can connect and understand the lyrics. But even more than that, Thursday is like lyric and music connection. Everytime i listen to thursday its like hooking up to the Matrix--I can feel the music and the lyrics--my senses get overwhelmed, its like the guitars are just singers, singing in some vaguely understandable language. Yeah, call me wierd but thats how it is.
edit: heres my concrete top this year, everything else is down there somehwere

Cursive
Interpol
Flaming Lips (i think thats 03, thought early 03)
