  • What do you guys think about computers?

So I'm going to be buying a new computer in the next couple of weeks.

Back like 3 years ago a computer geek friend of mine said all you ever need in a HD in 20GB..that was 3 years ago..now computers seem to come standard with 80-120 as the basic. This seems a bit unecessary.

    What your thoughts/oppinions about that?

I was thinking of going with about

    80GB HD
    512GB MEM
    128 video card

    That's the basics...rest is choice.
I came, I saw, I lagged out...

    that sounds ok jackie,

80-120 is necessary, you will be surprised how fast the space manages to disappear.

i dont know. ive had a 80gb for like over a year and ive only accumulated 30gb worth of shit.

80-120 is only necessary if youre some kind of downloading mongoloid like concreteschylyreddrdr
Animol> the solution for crimelization is openetion of heartization
Moltenrock> STOP TALKING TO MY TEAMMMATE ASSHOLE

That's all pretty vague. There is a world of difference between the both ends of the spectrum of 128MB video cards, RAM, etc.

Oh and I only have 40GB but I could easily fill a 1000GB hard drive. But I guess you're not like me where I am perpetually downloading at least 100kb/sec at all times :P.

It's better to have more space than you need then to suddenly find out you ran out of hard drive space. The price difference isn't that large either. I've seen 40 GB and 120 GB hard drives made from the same manufacturer being sold at the same store with only $50 (all prices Canadian) difference. ($150 vs $200) with 80 GB sandwiched in the middle. $50 isn't really much, especially when it's tripling the size.

If you have a net connection that is constantly on I'd say you really need over 100 Gb, 2x100 isn't that expensive really.
40 Gb goes to music, 20 to games, 20 to neccessities and the rest to movies.

I dont know if you have a CD Writer or not, but if you dont, when you download ISOs you have to keep em on the disc and load it with a virtual CD driver/software, right?

You'll find that 40GB is not enough.

If you ever want to make videos (shameless plug: own-age.com for Quake videos, check out annihilation), you will need alot (and i mean it) of place for uncompressed data. Same for audio CDs extracting, but it about 600mb per CD, no biggie.

512Mb is enough for anybody -till Doom3 and such games.
