Just watch the OAVs, the tv series is sucks becuase they ditched historical realism and plausiblity for the typical anime plot patches. Since it is a really long tv series, the animation quality is a bit lower as well. The story highlights (such as the fight with jinn) are all in the OAVs and somehow manage to go deeper into the main story.
