  • Suggestion for ?go base

It's really annoying when ?go base results in lopsided games, either because one of the captains doesn't know how to pick teams or if they just say "cap" so they can jav or terr (and they suck at it).

I think it should be recorded who is the captain picking teams and the score of each game, so that people who consistantly pick losing teams will be unable to pick teams. There could perhaps be some sort of rating system, with the ratings viewable before the game to assist the mod who's choosing captains, to ensure that captains are of equal caliber, and that there won't be one captain whose teams always win with the other whose teams always lose.

Just a thought, to prevent all those 10:00 - 0:01 games caused by newb captains.

I also have thought about this. However, ?go base is a very good place for new people to become better at basing. The games that are lopsided most likely are because of a captain that wants to get better at a certain ship. If they do not put them in that ship then nobody else will. Many people have gotten better this way. Necromatic, warbirdmaster and many others have all progressed nicely. Heck, even I have gotten alittle better at shark, or at least that is what I think. Anyways, the point is, it may make the lopsided games boring or not fun, but at the same time it helps the basing community by allowing unexperienced players play. I guess if you want a good match, TWLB and TWBD are good solutions. I do see your point though.

Newbies are trench wars future. So...a 'newbie' should get to play in a a ?go base game considering if they want to real bad. I once saw this one fellow, was in there for like 4 hours. Never played once. So, i picked him....he wasn't that half bad...45-56 rec...for a 'newbie' isnt that bad. I do agree I hate the games that are 10:00 00.32 games...but its a learning experience..and doesn't happen that often.
      the price is right, bitch.

If such a rating system would be implemented, newbies would never get a chance to get up the ladder since they are crushed by the 'elite' captains. It's not really fair to consistantly let the same players cap is it?

No, I will tell you what is needed.

What is needed is more people that will volunteer to captain. When I start the bot, there are usually only 2 or 3 people that ask to cap. Usually these 2 or 3 people are the captains that only ask to cap so they can play javelin, warbird or terrier. If I set someone else as captain that doesn't ask for it, they would just pass the cap on to one of the players that wants to jav/warbird themselves.

People have no right to complain about something like this if they aren't going to volunteer to captain a team themselves. This would never be an issue at all if more people could take the 5 minutes of effort to pick and captain a team sometimes.

            ALSO

Another issue is the certain few people that start the bot and captain themselves or captain people that have no idea what they are doing. These guys are the ones that captain themselves so that they can jav/whatever, or so they can actually play at all. A lot of the time they will call in their friends and give them any ship they want, which in a majority of the times results in a horrid lopsided game, with many bad people in the vital ships. There are a few bot starters that really should not have powers, but they are all staff and there is nothing we can do about that.

You feed a man a fish, you feed him for a day. You teach a man how to fish, you feed him for life. I don't know who said that, but wise words indeed.

We can't just disallow newbies to be able to captain, cause if we..

              A. Have a bot be used as a crutch for them
              B. not let "newbs" capt altogether

... then they will learn nothing and they will not be able to learn in the future. Just be friendly, be patient, and teach them how to pick. In time they'll come to find who plays what ship. You'll save yourself alot of anger and time in the long run.

Newbs should NOT captain. You cannot pick a successful team if you don't know the players and what ships they play. You should not captain a team if you don't know what you are doing, period. Play 50 or so games and then maybe you'll have a decent ability to pick a good team.

It's not just new people that ruin games either, it's older players who suck at certain key ships (javs/terr are good example) but _think_ they're good, and if they captain will put themselves in those ships. I have a kind of blacklist running, where I won't make the people on that list captain unless no one else asks for cap.

It's getting to be pretty long I'm finding out....

The problem with bad captains isn't so much the newness, it's the disregard for picking a "good team" in exchange for "OMG LEMME CAP SO I CAN JAV!".

I remember my first game in ?go base
wp picked me as a spider and i was like "OMG yaiks!"
I played the game and had this stupid 25-23 record
But then I looked at wp's record and he was like 21-2 and I was like "hahaa, i have more kills then you you and I'm new"
Later I realized a ter is not much of a killer
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...

Make a rating system for the captians, not the player's stats because I know everyone is afraid it will turn into another elim. The staff member can see if they are good at picking lines up and maybe other things like subs, changes can factor into it. I know that a lot of the staffers won't bother to look at it but it would be something for people to do besides play meaning less games day after day and maybe it will keep it going during the early hours. The captians them selves don't seem to be the problem, the people picking them appear to be so this will at least give the staffers and bot powered people something to use while picking.
