Hard-drive serial # is not in the HD's firmware, that is created by Dos when you format your Hard-drive.

I think its Track 0, and some offset you can change the serial # of your hard-drive.

You can even just use DEBUG to change afew values at track 0.

I did it before to defeat some copy protection so I could run an Electronics Design software at home and work.

I think the MAC ID on your lan card is stored on E^2PROM chip, which could be changed if you a Universal programmer.

You are referring to the hard drive 'Volume Serial Number', which gets re-assigned every time you reformat a drive. This number is useless for any kind of security relationships since it can easily be changed.
I was referring to the Manufacturers Serial Number that is always hard coded into the drives firmware, usually in a I2C chip. This number can not be easily changed.

I mean, think about it. If you were a hard drive manufacturer would you really let the serail numbers of your drives be changed when reformatted? Of course not, you would stash it in the firmware.

No, just a EEPROM programmer with the right 'pod' for the package size you are dealing with and the software to talk to it.
There are security bits present in many parts, and once these have been set, it becomes unreasonable to consider getting into the part.

When we do VISA compliant devices/firmware, it has to take a certain amount of time and cost (+$40k) to get into the chip before it gets a VISA approval.

But if someone is willing to spend the time and money, virtually any chip can be opened and the firmware sucked out of it.

Ephemeral, well I thought SS uses the Volume Serial # of the hard-drive for the machine-id #.

Yeah, well when I registered Xilinx Foundation development software for CPLD while at work I had to phone them up and tell them my volume serial # for C:\ drive, then they send me a registration file. So to get it to work at home, I had to match the volume serial # at work. It worked, but ironically hardly used the software, lol.

Yeah, obviously there would also be hard-drive mfg serial # in the firmware as well.

EEPROM, electrical erasible programmable read only memory. Yeah, you need an Universal Programmer and they aren't cheap. I know, I bought one a few years back, I have the Needham's EMP20, with several modules to allow me to program thousands of devices.

EPROM is the one with the little quartz window, and can erase only with UV light for afew minutes, sort of obsolete now.

As Ephemeral said, yeah with Microcontrollers or EEPROMS, when the manufactuer writes to these devices they set a LOCK/Security bit. Yeah, cost big money $$ to reverse engineer.

So Ephemeral, on the hard-drive they most often use an I2C EEPROM? Sometimes the hard-drive's microcontroller would have internal EEPROM as well I think, could use either.

For others I2C = Inter IC Bus (2wire Serial) which Philips developed. This allows a cpu to communicate to a variety of other chips (ADC, DAC, EEPROM, ...).

The beauty of I2C is that it only uses 2 pins on the CPU.

Yeah Leaf, tried out ZH again not too long ago just to see how it was, since the last time I was ZH. The idiot got all hard on staff chat with me like he was some real big shot asking who I was. Eventually realized I couldn't be on the same chat as that nerd, so I left staff all together.

I don't care much for British or Tats but I'd rather not get into it, it's not a personal thing. How could you talk in blueout? only staffers can do it and they get a *warning and their msg is sent to staff chat. Were you spamming their squad with private messages or freq messages?

Staffers are also not allowed to be involved in situations concerning their squad, squad mates or games they're in.
