It would have to be "certain players (that actually is active in ?go base)" and still be limited because it could just as easily kill the game.

I actually saw the perfect example on an idiot in base being capped, it was some kid named maisoul.

Started the game, and suddenly his team is full of AFKs, and he freaks out and curses and does lots of stupid shit. Then he subs in deluge, who asks why he's being such a nerd today, and maisoul gets pissed as the emo kid he is and subs out deluge right away.

And after an intense game of basing, and intense subbing, his team amazingly lost.

Caps in base

Hello everyone, i do believe that some of you may be talking about me in this thread and I'm sorry for capping bad captains, but the fact is people who complain about bad captains wouldn't be captain themselves.

I don't want to sound rude, but if you're going to complain, take action yourselves and ask for captain... don't always blame it on staff.

Personally, I believe there is nothing wrong with picking captains that are new... just not two new captains which would generally ruin the game. Even new players generally pick more experienced players that they have seen play, this means there is generally nothing wrong with them capping, as long as they know all the commands. I'm positive all the 'experienced' captains have only gotten 'good' with capping because they have practise. I believe that if we never give new players a chance, we'll never know if they are good captains. I believe that i am a fairly good captain... not sure if everyone agrees, but I have only gotten my captain "skills" through trial-and-error. In addition, I believe that basing may be 'dying' because many of the older, more experienced players only look for bd's and/or are retiring from the game. Sometimes, capping newer players is the only way they can play... and thus, bringing newer players into the basing scene.

I agree with everyone completely... I like to play fun games of ?go base myself. Personally, I hate captains who make special ships... javelin or warbird... lancs are questionable. When I captain, I almost never make special ships. I myself dislike captains who make special ships, but when people want staffers to rather kill the game than to cap "newb" captains, I think that's ridiculous. You guys are saying that "newb" caps are killing base making people leave. However, if you analyse the situation carefully, a game that does not start makes players leave as well. Therefore, I believe that making someone who may not make the best decisions is better than having a dead game. In addition, when some players complain about staff just going in to get a credit for calls and capping random people, I think that's ridiculous. When we captain "bad" people, others complain... but when we don't captain those people because of a bad past, we will never know if they have changed and are willing to become more responsible. They are then unhappy... so which side do staffers take? The unhappy people who are willing to change? or the people who complain and whine because they don't want to take the position of captain for themselves? ... you see, there's no easy solution for staffers so stop complaining about what we do or do not do.

Also, in this thread, megaman89 talked about staffers taking like 10 minutes before answering help calls to start base... I believe that is untrue. I am on almost like all the time, unless I am off watching t.v. or showering or something like that. Whenever I see a help call, I try to get it as quick as possible unless I am truely busy. When i am busy, there are often other staffers and personally, I have never seen calls to start base or wbduel etc. that have been withstanding for too long, let alone 10 minutes..

I seriously don't want to take sides of staff vs. players. I understand the perspectives of both sides, because I am someone who wants to play and have a good time, but at the same time I belong to staff. I have noticed that some extra people have been given bot powers over the last few days, we'll see how that works out. You see how hard it is for staff to make 'good' captain choices, then you reply again telling us what you think about the job staff does. I believe most staff who start base are people who base and will stick around to play the round they start as well. This means that they want a good game too and do not want bad captains. However, people complain and complain but do nothing. I've tried setting people who I feel are responsible as captains even if they have not asked for it. People like brookus, who are friendly (my opinion) have taken responsibility and have actually accepted that position. However, some people are not afk but they do not try to set captains to someone who they think are responsible and just sit there and watch base die.

I think this needs to be a joint effort between the players and staff. I want base to be fun as well.

Once again, I'm sorry if any of you think I have set bad captains in the past, and I, personally, will try to set "Better" captains based on my judgement.

As falk said the main problem is that people that should be captain simply will not do it. I do not know if they think they are to good to be captain because they know they will be picked or what but there are a lot of times that I set someone captain and they set someone on !notplaying or a bot captain just to be cute. That is rather annoying so why not someone who actually asks for the position?? By the way, I have credit for starting 9 games of base/wbduel/javduel this month so far and I have probably started close to 30 games. Most staff do not wait for a help call to start one of those bots if they are in the arena.

my specific issue is not with capping newbies. i just can't stand to see the same idiots who have already proven themselves to be terrible captains getting cap over and over and over just because they spam their "OMGZ GIMME ZEE CAPTAINSHIP!" macro the fastest. as far as capping newbies goes, sure let newbies get a chance to learn the system. however, if you start up a game and do indeed cap newbies, don't just start it and take off. stick around and guide them through it. point out who's good in what ship and help them make some picks their first few times around the block.

it's really this simple. you can still cap newbies as long as you help them along until they're capable of handling it on their own. you can't cap idiots who should be blacklisted because they mismanage their team game after game after game and create incredibly poor games as a result of that mismanagement. i still don't see why we don't have an active blacklist. it's not like we'd put a ton of people on it. there are just a select few that i'm sure the general ?go base population would agree upon. it's such a small step to take, and it would solve a big part of the problem.

as to the issue of no one else asking for cap so you're "forced" into capping the idiots who should be blacklisted, may i suggest you take stabwound's approach. just don't start a game until you can get some good caps. if you have players in the arena whom you know to be competent caps and you flat out refuse to start a game unless those players step up, i'm willing to bet you'll get your caps. and if you don't, well then you just saved everyone the ten minutes it would have taken to sit through a shitty and/or blowout game.

I think that if I was never capped in my first few times at .?Go base, I would never have been picked, and never would have come back. I would have stuck to dueling, and led a much sadder life. :P
Also, props to Hillpeace for recruiting me as a newb in .?Go base after my first game there ever. Sometimes newbs just need opportunitites; I know that I picked up how to cap well after a game or two.
