Stealing names

I was reading a closed thread about name stealing...

I was unaware such a thing existed and I was interested in how someone steals a name? Is it off of your client or some server?

Any clarification would be supreme... AND I MEAN SUPREME! :grin:

Because using brute force techniques on SSC servers is unlikely most names are stolden because of name trading. Basicly if I had a name and sold/traded it to you/anyone I could do ?lostpassword on it still if I had the email to it and get it back.

There are other ways names are stolden but as Dant-Zu said I wouldn't trust anyone with that knowledge.

My interest in name stealing is purely based on confusion of how a name could be stolen. I didn't know you could request a password change or trade names. But speaking of that why is making spoof names not illegal? Some dude name Dr Snyder is out their and hes making me look even more stupid than I already am!
