Scurvy, I feel you. Did you get the 15 or 17" macbook pro?
What you want to do is, get bootcamp from apple, and install windows xp with it, that way you can just boot over into windows and run continuum as you see fit.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
That should get you going with pretty much everything you'll want to run under windows. Then when you're done, you simply boot back over into OS X to do what you feel.
If you do so I wouldn't mind reading about your experience here. I just use VPC with my G4 Quicksilver, but that isn't really a good solution, especially with the machine you've got there."Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX

The only thing left that uses PPC is the PowerMac G5.
And Apple filed for a trademark for the name: Mac Pro
So we know what that one will be called when it switches over too.
In August we get the WWDC, and it could be announced there, alongside 10.5 Leopard.
What I wonder is if the iMac will become the Mac, and then the big desktop the Mac Pro, or if there will be a junior sized desktop that'll be the Mac."Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX

Actually it means that I'm a stubborn holdout until someone entices me by showing me GTA on a Mac, and I begin to cry and pay more than I can afford in order to get ahold of one.
I admit that I was against the Intel switch when I first heard of it, and couldn't have imagined that it could possibly be true. But if it somehow changes enough perception in people so that when I say "I'm on a Mac" they don't instantly think "Elitist Shitface Moron" and just something else, almost anything else, then it'll end up a good thing."Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX

Plus they'll be dropping support for the older models with the older processors at some point, possibly soon. Though I guess it isn't like you're really clamoring to apple themselves for your upkeep on bash/whatever unix shell you're using. This may not be the case but I have a feeling that it is most likely that Mac users rely on the Mac using community more for that type of thing rather than Jobs and Co.
But I thought one of the biggest issues about using all the x86 and windows stuff was due to the shoddy security due to most of the computing populace (and by extension, most of that populace with nothing better to do) using it and paging through the ins and outs of the architechture? Or did they make this switch to hope to appeal to a wider consumer base/"finally be abel to plae teh gamez yo" because of perhaps fledging sales? If that's the case I really don't see it helping them all that much, unless it helps make the hardware cheaper.sage

Its the design of the OS - NOT the hardware it runs on that makes macs secure.
Mac OS is bases on Unix, (like linux which also runs on x86) which is far more secure in design than that of windows. In windows you have to run as adminstrator to do anything pretty much, however that is not neceeseerry on linux / mac systems.
As the standard user (mac/linux)has limited permissions if you do get infected by a virus/spyware, there is little it can do as it will not have the permissions to make system alterations. However on windows your box is owned as it will gain administrator permissions. Thats why there is so few viruses for mac and linux there is no way they could spread and do any real damange without admin permissions.
I have got ss to run on linux using wine (the instructions are on the wine website and at minegoboom) and the performace was impressive, no noticable difference from windows. However im a noob at linux and it doesnt like my laptop keys so i still play on windows.
There is a similar project for macs called Dar Wine http://darwine.opendarwin.org/ you may with some expermentaion get it to run on your mac using that. I dont own a mac so i cant try it.Rediscover online gaming. Get Subspace

I'm still waking up, so you'll have to forgive any blah-ness.
Flabby, Creager isn't an idiot, he knows what he's talking about. He's talking about the stack and page protection on a RISC processor.
It was a concern from what I can tell Creag, about the x86 security, but from what I've heard, they're just going to go for it and do what they can in that aspect.
Edit: I just remembered what I wanted to say here. As far as I can tell, the focus seems to be more on keeping someone from being able to get to the point where they can screw with that stuff, rather than keeping it from breaking if they manage to do so.
One of the major reasons for the switch, and any PowerMac G5 owner (especially the earlier gens) can tell you this. Those bastards run hot. They're power hogs, and the waste heat they put out is ridiculous. I didn't even realize how bad it was for a long time, as I don't have a G5, but believe me, it's crazy. They actually have CPU throttling settings, just like laptops do, just because of how much heat and the power consumption. And this only really happened with the G5's. The G4's didn't consume nearly the amount of power as their x86 counterparts, and in some cases, 1/3 the amount of power.
Because of it you could see 1.6ghz G4 laptops, and not a single G5. Apple was already used to cramming these desktop processors in laptops, thin ones, and making them work, so I think when the IBM and the G5 said sorry, we can't do 3ghz, and no we can't do a low power version for a portable, that kicked them in the ass.
Intel says hey we've got this Core Duo coming up, here's the specs for that, and Jobs says it's time to switch again. Of course if he'd had his way the first time, it would've already been on x86. When they started getting hemmed in by 68k (Oh my glorius 68030 Mac back in the day) and started going through that conversion, even at that point Jobs wanted to go to x86.
Apple has always been a hardware company. That's what drives their sales. OS X is a great operating system and it has some good foundation with NextStep. But Apple don't make money off selling copies of OS X, any more than they make money of selling the iLife boxes. In fact they might just take a loss on the iLife and OS X development vs strict sales. They make these things to drive the sales of the computers to run them. Car makers don't make leather bucket seats to sell leather bucket seats. They make em to sell more cars. And I think that's what the whole switch to Intel, OS X updating so many times to keep ahead of the game, iLife, iTunes, etc, I think that's pretty much what it's all about.Last edited by Sarien; 05-27-2006, 11:50 AM."Sexy" Steve Mijalis-Gilster, IVX
