Backstory: I went to TorrentSpy and started to read the first news bit which was about Counter Strike. I haven't played in years, but I figured it'd be interesting. Its about this guy named "Virellek" who is sick of Abusive Moderators and Players who act like morons. After going through the list, I noticed alot of these points apply to our game, and I just figured I'd share it, because I think we've all had a run in with these types of people here or in some other game. First, our favourite: The Abusive Moderator.

Yes, that’s right; the people who pay good money to run game servers which give me the ability to play online are some of the most stupid, childish, immature people I have ever come across. What brings my disgust of these people who are willing to put the cash on the table to let me play my games in peace? It’s because half of them don’t.
I understand what it takes to run game servers; I’ve run so many servers that I have lost track. I’ve run them from GriffinRUN, Game Daemons, Art of War Central and even my own personal setup running on an OC192 backbone. I even ran a server which was ranked as having the 2nd highest player connection rate in all of Canada (65,000 player connections a month), but never did I treat the players on my server the way many of these administrators treat their players.
Anyone who has played Counter-Strike long enough has run across one of these administrators. They vary in levels of stupidity. First we’ll start with the general stupid administrator.
This is the complete newbie administrator. They just recently received their administrative powers and instantly transform into this evil super hacking/cheating monster of a player. They use every possible combination of admin commands which gives them extra abilities over the general player population. They think it’s hilariously funny that they can pop out of a wall and blow your head off using some special administer weapon while not taking any damage because of their invincibility, all the while being invisible.
In response the players go nuts, they start cursing and swearing, and for some reason, if friendly fire is on, they decide to take out their rage by killing their unsuspecting teammates. Of course this results in these unsuspecting teammates retaliating in the next round for the obvious TK in the previous round. It turns into a complete bloodbath. 10 minutes later the server is empty, and the newbie admin is still there flying through walls thinking how wicked cool he is now that he has admin commands.
Those guys are bad, but nothing compared to the intermediate administrator. Once they get past the newbie phase of administration, they get serious. Their new goal in life is to ban every cheater that exists. Sounds noble doesn’t it? The only problem is they really have no clue how to tell who’s cheating and who isn’t. So they base their cheater rating on their own skill level. Anyone who is better then them cheats and anyone who is not as good as them do not cheat. The ones in the middle are the ones they spend 30 minutes spectating and then decide they are too good to be true and ban them. Of course these intermediate administrators usually suck pretty badly, so the list of cheaters includes about 99% of the players in the CPL, and 60% of the general Counter-Strike population. After they ban you, if you try to come to them to get un-banned, they refuse to listen to you. They are convinced they cannot possibly make any mistakes because they are the Jedi Knight of the Administrative Order. So they ban you off IRC too. Somehow this all makes him feel powerful. After the ban he gets all his buddies to reassure him that he made the right move in banning the innocent player and they all have a little party together to celebrate their collective stupidity.
Then we have the top of the pack – the expert administrator. These guys don’t play the game much anymore as all their time is spent working on the server itself. These guys think they are the real deal. They make sure everyone knows that they run a Counter-Strike server as if it’s something that we all aspire to do. How can that be so bad you ask? These are the nerds who care nothing what-so-ever about you. You are the scum between their noses (which they usually enjoy eating for breakfast). They will decide right out of the blue the server is too laggy and needs to be fixed right away. Of course this decision is made without having played on the server all day. So they kick everyone and reboot the server. Still doesn’t fix the problem they say. Well, we can’t have any lag spikes, so we’ll just shut down the entire server and fix the problem. The next 4 hours are spent while the administrator pulls every plug-in the server has to try to find where the problem lies. They constantly will run the server, get a few players playing, and then kick them all in the next restart to test the next batch of plug-ins.
Unfortunately usually they cannot figure it out (because it’s their host who’s overloaded the hardware with too many game servers) so they keep all the plug-ins they don’t like turned off and blame the lag on them. The servers back up, and you FINALLY can play again… until a few hours later.
At that point admin decides to take a second shot at the server. Guess what the first step he takes is? That’s right, time to shutdown the server. This usually happens right in the middle of a really good match (of which the expert administrator never seems to be a part of). Down goes the server, and the clock starts ticking. They usually spend their time reactivating the plug-ins they removed previously as they now think everyone has forgotten that he deactivated the plug-ins to fix the problem in the first place. Finally he is done ‘tweaking’ the server and he starts it back up. The server ends up in the exact state it was in before the administrator started the whole ordeal. The admin will claim an amazing increase in performance and hail his work as a complete success, while in reality, he did nothing at all.
I realize many administrators out there spend a lot of time getting their server running - I’ve been there. But there are always those administrators who completely screw the game over, and unfortunately they overshadow the good admin’s.
To the newbie administrators: it is NOT FUNNY for you to completely abuse your newfound tools. If you wish to test them out, test them on your friends who you already know and will understand that you’re just having some fun. General players do not appreciate the ‘humor’ involved in getting their ass kicked by an invincible, invisible, no-clip, super-powered administrator.
To the intermediate administrators: NOT EVERYONE CHEATS. I was just banned as recently as 3 hours ago for getting a 3:1 ratio on cs_assault as a CT. 3:1 ratios are easily attainable! Remember, there are people out there who can ‘see’ through a wall by using his ears and imagination to position the player walking on the other side of that wall you claim he is wall hacking on. There are players who are able to dodge bullets and kill 5 guys without breaking a sweat. There are players who can get 5 or 6 headshots in a row. There are players who are able to predict how another player is going to attack. These things are all possible and happen quite often, without a single cheat involved. Do not ban a guy unless he is AT LEAST 5 times better then you, or are obviously using an aimbot (shaky screen style) or speed hack (instant movement with a knife). Then I’d start calling into question the legitimacy of his skill. Otherwise he may just be a really good player on his favorite map.
To the expert administrators: Treat the players with a bit more respect. Don’t shut down the server whenever you feel it’s necessary. It’s rude, inconsiderate and most of all, really, really annoying! Things don’t have to be done right away, you can wait until the slowdown in traffic on your server. I understand you pay for it, but still, have a bit of respect for the people who make your server popular and fun to play on. An empty server is a sucky server, and treating the players with disrespect is a quick way to get an empty server.
